‘Elf’ plays at Boardman High

MUSICAL PROGRAM: The Boardman High School Drama Guild will present “Elf the Musical” 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Boardman Performing Arts Center. “Elf the Musical” is an energetic version of the well-known holiday movie starring Will Ferrell. The story follows Buddy the Elf, a human, adopted and raised by Santa and the elves in the North Pole, as he ventures to New York City to find his dad, the ultimate scrooge, Walter Hobbs. The musical version of this modern-day classic includes big band Christmas tunes.

MONTHLY MEETING: William Penn Branch 28, Youngstown, will have its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Austintown Eat’n Park Restaurant. Upcoming events will be discussed.

VOLNEY ROGERS PROGRAM: The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will host a program on Volney Rogers and the origins of Mill Creek Park as part of the monthly Bites and Bits program at noon Thursday at the Tyler History Center, Youngstown. Speaker is Rick Shale, a local author and historian.

SOCIETY TO MEET: The Poland Historical Society will hold a business meeting 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Little Red Schoolhouse, 4515 Center Road, Poland. Plans will be made for the Christmas party.

FOCUS TO MEET: Friends Offering Compassionate Understanding Support (FOCUS), will meet 6 p.m. Wednesday at T.J.’s at Holiday Inn, 7410 South Ave., Boardman. All breast cancer survivors and their support people are welcome. For information, call 330-726-1611.

TEACHER COLLECTING HATS: Jessica Gardner, a teacher at Brookfield High School, is collecting winter hats for cancer patients during November. Gardner is a breast cancer survivor and made it her mission to keep cancer patients warm this winter. She will donate the hats to five local cancer centers including The Hope Center for Cancer Care in Howland, the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center in Youngstown and Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley in Boardman.

The Brookfield Middle School Student Council is helping out with the cause and collecting hats for Gardner to donate. As of now, nearly 200 hats have been collected and almost $500 has been raised to purchase additional hats for donation. Gardner and BMS Student Council are collecting hats until Nov. 25. The hats will be donated to the cancer centers during Thanksgiving break.
