MERCY PROMOTES MOVEMBER: Mercy Health-Youngstown is asking men across the Mahoning Valley to ditch their razors this month to support men’s health.

Man Up Mahoning Valley, a component program of the Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley, is designed to educate men in the area about the need to be checked for prostate cancer. During the month of November, the program is encouraging men to “grow a ‘stache, start a conversation, save a life.”

The goal for November is to have as many men as possible grow out their facial hair for 30 days in an effort to raise awareness as well as funding to help fight prostate cancer. Every dollar raised stays local and benefits Mahoning Valley programs that support men’s prostate health.

All participants are invited to submit photos of their facial hair to the Man Up Mahoning Valley Facebook page. To wrap up the month, a “Shave Off” event will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 30 near Target at the Eastwood Mall.

CREDIT UNION CELEBRATES 50TH: The Diocese of Youngstown Federal Credit Union celebrated its 50th anniversary earlier this year.

The credit union was chartered in 1971 when seven diocesan employees petitioned the National Credit Union Association to establish a credit union for all employees in any diocesan agency listed in the diocesan directory.

Although it has no affiliation or connection to the Diocese, the credit union’s membership is defined by the members who work and worship in the various diocesan agencies and parishes.

The credit union’s first report showed assets of $8,576, with a membership of 169. It now has assets of $62,908 with a membership more than 3,000.

In its first two decades, two smaller credit unions merged with it to expand its field of membership to include the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 87 and employees of Wean United Plant 11 and Cold Metal Products. Also in 1981, St Elizabeth Medical Center, now Mercy Health, allowed its employees to join. Now Mercy Health is the largest membership group within DOY.
