Virus impacts wagering for racinos

Bettors at Austintown dished out $984.5M

Wagering on video lottery terminals at Ohio’s seven racinos was off a stunning $2.5 billion for the year, obviously due to shutdowns brought on the viral outbreak. However, betting started to rebound in July.

The racinos operate on a year that runs July to June, so their new year, or fiscal year, began last month. All of the racinos were closed March 14 through June 18 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bettors from July 2019 to June 2020 wagered $9 billion compared to $11.5 billion for the previous year, according to the Ohio Lottery Commission, which oversees video lottery terminals, or VLTs, in Ohio.

About $8 billion in credits were won with a net win of $820 million for the same period. For the prior year, $10.3 billion in credits were won with a net win of $1 billion.

Last month, credits played totaled $984.7 million, which was $30.8 million off from July 2019, but $21 million more than played in July 2018. There were $878 million in credits won and a net win of $95 million in July. The percent payout was 90.3 and the win per day was $273.

At Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course in Austintown, bettors wagered $984.5 million for the year July 2019 to June 2020, off $266.4 million from prior year, when $1.2 billion in credits were played.

About $874.1 million in credits were won with a net win of $95.5 million for the year, compared to $1.1 billion credits won and a net win of $123 million the year prior.

For July, $115.9 million in credits were played, which is right on par with the $115.7 million credits played in July 2019 and about $13.7 million more than in July 2018.

There were $103 million in credits won and a net win of $11.2 million for July. The percent payout was 90.2, and the VLT win per day was $325.

The racino is owned by Wyomissing, Pa.-based Penn National Gaming Inc., which also owns Hollywood Gaming at Dayton Raceway in Dayton.
