Indoor golf center and Planet Fitness new tenants at mall

BOARDMAN — Indoor golf center The Bunker and Planet Fitness are planned lifestyle additions at the Southern Park Mall, which also has a commitment from one of its anchor stores to reinvest and extend its lease.

Mall owner / operator, Columbus-based Washington Prime Group, has announced it has a lease agreement with The Bunker to occupy a 36,000-square-feet space with 12 golf simulators, dining and bar areas and outdoor patio overlooking DeBartolo Commons, the planned athletic and entertainment green space and event venue at the former Sears store.

It also will include the Ben Curtis Golf Academy, a full-service learning and teaching academy run by 2003 British Open Champion Ben Curtis. The Bunker’s attached restaurant will be Bogey’s, and will be operated by the owners of the Bogey’s Restaurant in Lowellville.

“As a lifelong Valley golfer, I am very excited to help bring this needed indoor golf facility to our area,” said Jonah Karzmer, owner / operator of The Bunker.

Planet Fitness will relocate its Boardman neighborhood gym to a new 28,000-square-foot space between JCPenney and Buffalo Wild Wings.

Retailer and anchor store Macy’s has agreed to renovate the store and extend its lease while anchor JCPenney has expressed its intent to remain at the mall.

Also, Pittsburgh-based PNC Bank has agreed to renovate its location at the mall on Market Street and extend its lease, while construction work is underway on the 4-acre DeBartolo Commons, according to the company.

The Bunker, Bogey’s, Planet Fitness, DeBartolo Commons and Steel Valley Brew Works, a local brew and entertainment venue that was announced last November, would be among the new tenants that are expected to be open in the second half of 2021.

Washington Prime plans to invest about $30 million into the mall over the next few years. About $8 million has been invested so far, according to the company.
