Revenue at Ohio’s four casinos hit an all-time high of $86 million in July, the first full month casinos were open following the state’s discontinued stay-at-home order amid the viral outbreak.

Hollywood Casino Toledo led the record-setting amount. The site posted gaming revenue of $33 million, the highest monthly total ever posted by a casino property, according to the Ohio Casino Control Commission.

Commission spokeswoman Jessica Franks said a likely factor in the strong month for Toledo is that Detroit’s casinos were closed and didn’t reopen until recently. Another possible factor, she said, is people are finding an alternative outlet for their entertainment dollars.

“It’s hard to say exactly why, but if I had to guess, movie theaters are still closed, there are no concerts,” she said. “Folks who may have entertainment dollars they would like to spend, they may be choosing to go to a casino. It’s one of the few options that are open right now.”

She also reported casino operators are noting, albeit anecdotally, the crowds are younger, perhaps because the elderly are staying away due to the risk of COVID-19.

The commission reported slot revenue increased $14.8 million from July 2019 to $62.7 million last month. Table revenue last month also rose, from $22.4 million to $23.2 million, an increase of about $830,000 from last year.

In June, the casinos posted revenue of $34 million with $25.6 million from slots. All four opened June 19 after closing in March.

For the year so far, the casinos have earned $299.9 million. For the first seven months of 2019, the total was $498.2 million.

The casinos in Ohio are Jack Cleveland Casino, Jack Cincinnati Casino, Hollywood Casino Toledo and Hollywood Casino Columbus.
