Berlin Center man charged with trespassing during rally

YOUNGSTOWN — A Berlin Center man will be arraigned June 23 in Youngstown Municipal Court on misdemeanor criminal trespass, accused of climing a fence and trying to get onto the roof of the Thomas E. Lambros U.S. Courthouse on Sunday to throw water balloons at protestors.

The “March for Justice” rally was held to protest the death of George Floyd, 46, who died in police custody after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, 44, knelt on his neck to restrain him.

A security guard for the courthouse, 125 Market St., detained Elbert B. Repich, 21, of Berlin Center at 1:37 p.m. Sunday and held him for police.

The security guard told police Repich scaled a fence with a basket of water balloons and intended to throw them at protestors who gathered on the street and in front of the Mahoning County Common Pleas courthouse across the street.

Youngstown police said Repich told them he did not realize it was federal property, but he did intend to throw the water balloons from a roof onto Market Street.

Repich was taken into custody but released later Sunday.
