Youngstown Torch Club will host presentation

Staff report

The Youngstown Torch Club will sponsor a presentation on Strouss’ Department Store at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Kilcawley Center’s Chik-fil-A restaurant on the campus of Youngstown State University. Dr. Thomas Welsh will present “Strouss’: Youngstown’s Dependable Store,” which will track the history of the former downtown landmark, from its orgins as a family-owned business to its subsequent role as the flagship of a popular division of the May Co.

A researcher and professional writer, Dr. Welsh is the author of “Closing Chapters: Urban Change, Religious Reform, and the Decline of Youngstown’s Catholic Elementary Schools.” He earned a doctorate degree in cultural foundation of education from Kent State University in 2009.

The Youngstown Torch Club is an organization of professional people who gather once a month to listen to a paper presentation while enjoying dinner, fellowship and conversation.

Anyone interested in attending Monday’s program should contact Don Butler at 330-856-5897.
