Church hosts chili cook-off

BOARDMAN

Boardman United Methodist Church recently hosted its eighth annual Sue Hernan Memorial Chili Cook-off in the church fellowship hall.

The event is held each year to raise funds for the church’s camp ministries and missions’ organizations.

Fifteen cooks competed to win the white apron award. First-place was awarded to Dale Hawkins for his famous razorback ham-style chili. This was the third time that he has won this event.

Meg McKelvey of Youngstown finished in second place with a recipe that included a chicken-style chili and third place was awarded to the team including Sierra and Elizabeth Hernan.

The people’s choice award went to Michael Hardy of State College, Pa., with his special venison-style recipe.

Heidi Hoffman of Austintown won the award for the most unique recipe. More than 150 people were in attendance.

The church raised over $1,300 for the annual event, which will be used to create scholarships to send area youths to summer camps.
