Class of 1949 to meet for lunch


Struthers High School January and June Classes of 1949 will meet for a monthly luncheon at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bogey’s.

Shelter to host raffles


West Side Cats will host a basket and 50-50 raffle from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Davidson’s Restaurant, 3636 Canfield Road. Participants can watch the game and eat while supporting Youngstown’s only no-kill cat shelter. For information, call Marie at 330-519-5002.

Society to host concert


The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will welcome Joseph N. Rubin’s Orchestra for a performance of “Over There: The Music of World War I” in commemoration of the centennial of the Armistice. The concert will be held, at 2 p.m. on Veteran’s Day, Sunday, at the Tyler History Center, 325 West Federal St. Tickets are $20 for reserved seating, $15 for general admission, $10 for MVHS members and $5 for veterans and active military. Operation Christmas Child seeks donations


Sites in the Youngstown area will be among 5,000 U.S. drop-off locations collecting shoebox gifts for children overseas during Operation Christmas Child’s National Collection Week, from Monday through Nov. 19. Families, churches and groups are busy transforming empty shoeboxes into fun gifts filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items. The Samaritan’s Purse project partners with local churches across the globe to deliver these items. Area residents hope to collect more than 25,000 gifts to contribute to the 2018 global goal of reaching 11 million children. Drop-offs can be made from noon to 6 p.m. Nov. 12-19 at Calvary Baptist Church, 1463 Shields Road.

Wellness Wednesday


The Salem Library will host Wellness Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s Quaker Meeting Room, 821 E. State St. Independent Life and Health Insurance agent Renee Grant will give information on how to lower prescription drug costs. Registration is required online at or by calling 330-332-0042. The program is free and open to the public.

Stores raise funds for hospitals


The Mahoning Valley Walmart and Sam’s Club stores recently raised $101,392 for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. The effort was part of a national campaign for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals which resulted in $36,514,895 raised, putting the total raised in the U.S. and Canada since 1987 over the $1 billion mark. Research done by Engage for Good shows that the cumulative $1 billion in cash raised for CMN Hospitals over the years by Walmart and Sam’s Club represents the largest amount ever raised for a nonprofit by one company in North America. The Salem Walmart was the top fundraising store in Mahoning Valley and raised $14,947. The Sam’s Club store in Boardman doubled their fundraising dollars over last year, raising $9,943. Over the last 10 years, Mahoning Valley Walmart and Sam’s Club locations have raised $2 million for Akron Children’s.

Relay For Life meetings


The Mahoning County Relay For Life team will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Dec. 11 at the American Cancer Society office, 525 N. Broad St.
