YSU preps for 24th SFA, second at Wean Park

YOUNGSTOWN — The 24th Summer Festival of the Arts will spend its second summer at Wean Park on July 9 and 10.

The event, presented by Youngstown State University and JAC Management Group, originally was held on the YSU campus but moved to the downtown Youngstown park last year.

“We are returning to Wean Park with renewed excitement that the Summer Festival of the Arts is continuing into its 24th year, helping to promote the Valley’s vibrant arts and culture scene. It’s exciting to be back in this venue for the second year,” said Lori A. Factor, director of community engagement and events for the YSU’s Cliffe College.

Wean Park’s location between the Covelli Centre and the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre provided plenty of parking for festivalgoers, Factor said. The site also will allow the festival to expand in the future to include public art projects or other art displays.

“People were intrigued being underneath the Market Street Bridge,” she said. “It’s a cool atmosphere and gives a different perspective of downtown.”

One of the main attractions of the festival is an artists’ marketplace that will include more than 70 local, regional and national artists selling original, hand-crafted pieces jewelry, paintings, sketches, sculptures, glass, wood and textiles.

Artist applications for the event are available at www.ysu.edu/sfa.

Also on the site is a form to volunteer for the event.

“What we learned last year is we need to have just as many volunteers, if not more,” Factor said. “The way the park is situated, there isn’t much drivability. We want to make sure we do as good of a job as last year helping our artists and other vendors get set up.”

Live entertainment will be featured both days. Factor said the lineup is set and will be announced next month.

“When we do release the schedule, the community will be very happy with some newcomers as well as some oldies but goodies we’ve had over the years,” she said. “One area we’re collectively talking about is having a more dedicated area for our music groups with the expert help of the team from JAC.”

More than 20 arts and cultural organizations will have information tents on site during the event, and the Summer Festival of the Arts will continue to be a magnet for other events that same weekend.

The Youngstown Wine and Jazz Concert, featuring Four80East and Youngstown native Sharon Rae North, will be held at the amphitheater on July 9. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church’s summer festival will take place that weekend and a Youngstown Flea is scheduled July 9.

Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 9 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 10. Admission is free.
