YSU hosts Scholastic Art Awards ceremony

The Northeast Ohio Scholastic Art Awards ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Youngstown State University.

The ceremony will feature awards given to students who received Gold and Silver Key awards as well as honorable mention recognition. The 474 individual and 21 portfolio regional entries from students in grades 7 to 12 in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties reflect each participating school’s outstanding student work.

From these entries, a panel of judges selects works to receive honorable mention, Silver and Gold keys and five nominations for the prestigious American Visions Awards. The American Visions Award and Gold Key finalists will be sent to New York City, where they will compete for awards and possible scholarships with other student entries from across the nation.

The program is designed to encourage student creativity, provide the opportunity for enrichment by interaction with their contemporaries, and bring student artwork into the public view.

The ceremony will take place in Bliss Hall’s Ford Theater. Admission is free.

The students’ work will be on display through Wednesday in YSU’s Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, on the second floor of Bliss Hall. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Supporting this year’s show were Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley, the Youngstown Foundation and Boardman Rotary as well as the Youngstown State University department of visual and dramatic arts.
