TAG displays board’s work

Trumbull Art Gallery board members will exhibit their own work and pick artists to exhibit alongside them in a show opening Saturday.

Gallery Director William Mullane said, “I was trying to find a way to involve others in choosing artists for the shows. The board members really haven’t been involved in scheduling and it seemed like it would be fun.

For the TAG Board Curatorial Project Exhibition, each board member who also is an artist was invited to submit a few pieces for display and to pick another artist they wanted to showcase. Board members who aren’t artists were invited to pick two artists for inclusion.

“I’ll hang them by artist and not mixed together so we’ll know (who each board member picked),” Mullane said. “It will be interesting to see what we get, who we get. It will be fun.”

Mullane will be showing some of his work and picked Youngstown artist James Crum for the show.

“I was thinking of someone whose work I’d like to see next to mine,” he said. “I just thought I’d like to hang next to him.”

He also let Crum’s choices influence the work he decided to exhibit.

“The things he texted me were figurative and portrait-oriented, so I went with a similar kind of thing,” Mullane said. “We’re diametrically different when we do that kind of work, so it will be a different take altogether.”

Many of the artists featured in the show have shown their work at TAG, but some of the artists chosen are exhibiting for the first time, and Mullane said some of TAG’s newer board members haven’t had an opportunity to display their work at the gallery until now.

Participating board members and the artists the chose are:

• Jacki Mountan — Ed Hallahan

• Veronique Gerard (not exhibiting) — Diane Beatty and Jeanie Gordon

• Ed Jakubik — Danica Zeise

• Sue Senvissky — Andy Bednar

• Marty Cohen (not exhibiting) — Thomas Sewickley

• Stephanie Sferra — Laura York

• Paul Antonchak — Angela Natoli

• Salli Kowalski — Marie Dippolito

• Robert Byrd and Kendra Murray Byrd — Kenya Murray Franklin

• Patty Cleary-Talstein — Ron Krygowski

• Sevasti S. Tripoulas (not exhibiting) — Tommy Brown and T. Dallas Tripoulas

The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 18, and a reception is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 29.
