Stambaugh hosts TubaChristmas

YOUNGSTOWN — Tubas, euphoniums and sousaphones will take the melody and provide the bass when TubaChristmas comes to Stambaugh Auditorium on Sunday.

The concert features a volunteer orchestra of bass horn players playing special arrangements of holiday favorites.

While Tuba Christmas has been a Mahoning Valley tradition for more than 20 years, this is the 48th anniversary of the first TubaChristmas. It was conceived by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor, William J. Bell, born Christmas Day 1902. The first TubaChristmas was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, Dec. 22, 1974.

Past events locally have drawn close to 100 tuba and euphonium players ranging in age from 7 to 92 years old.

The concert starts at 3:30 p.m. at Stambaugh, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. It is free to attend, and it also will be livestreamed via The Digital Concert Hall app. For more information, call 330-747-5175.
