Butler show helps keep museum free

Assorted rambling from the world of entertainment:

• The Butler Institute of American Art has three juried events each year.

The one this weekend is different from the Midyear and the Area Artists Annual in an important way — it helps keeps admission to the museum free.

“An American Holiday,” the 50th annual arts and crafts show, returns to the Youngstown museum on Saturday and Sunday after a COVID-19-imposed hiatus last year. The show is one of the museum’s biggest annual fundraisers and helps support not only its free admission policy but also its free arts education programs.

A wide variety of hand-crafted pieces will be available from the artisans chosen to participate, including pottery and ceramics, paintings, prints, drawings, glass work, jewelry, fiber wearables, leather goods, metal goods, sculpture, wood pieces and herbal products

Participating artists and artisan vendors also donate items for a chance auction to raise funds for the Butler, and tickets for the auction will be sold throughout the weekend.

Special guest will be New Middletown pinstriping artist Steve Chaszeyka, who had a solo show at the Butler earlier this year and also organized a group show of fellow pinstriping artists. He will be giving away beautiful nameplates that he has created especially for The Butler while supplies last.

“An American Holiday” runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults with children ages 11 and younger admitted free.

• In a Saturday profile feature I wrote earlier this fall about Liberty native and singer / clarinetist Kristen Mather de Andrade, she mentioned plans to release a holiday EP.

That EP, “Evergreen,” is out now. It includes what she calls four “less obvious” Christmas carols — “Riu Riu Chiu,” “Bring A Torch,” “The Holly and the Ivy” and “Pat-A-Pan” — and one original, “Union Square,” written by Annie Pasqua. All are performed in a chamber music trio setting.

Mather de Andrade released “Clarao,” a collection of Brazilian music, earlier this year, and she is principal clarinetist with the West Point Band.

The EP can be heard on the streaming services and is available for digital download at distrokid.com.

• Foo Fighters announced a 17-show 2022 tour this week, and it will start May 14 at The Pavilion at Star Lake in Burgettstown, Pa.

The tour will include several stadium shows in addition to the arena / amphitheater dates. The current list of dates doesn’t include any Ohio shows.

The band played Cincinnati last summer, and its scrapped 25th anniversary tour in 2020 included a Cleveland date at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. However, the band founded by Warren native Dave Grohl did play a couple of songs at the FieldHouse as part of October’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, and the band played an intimate club show at House of Blues the week of the ceremony.

Opening acts haven’t been announced yet.

Tickets for the Star Lake date go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday through Live Nation.
