Valentine’s show sells out at Ford

Pandemic or not, couples want something to do for Valentine’s Day.

“Let’s Fall in Love,” a concert featuring singer Amanda Beagle backed by the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra Jazz Combo, was a quick sell-out at the DeYor Performing Arts Center’s Ford Family Recital Hall.

“I was really excited for the opportunity to perform live during these exceptional times,” Beagle said.

Beagle is no stranger to the stage, even if she hasn’t had many opportunities to perform since last March due to COVID-19. The Howland native has performed at New York’s Lincoln Center in the Little Orchestra Society’s production of “Babes in Toyland,” and she toured the world as a performer on Holland America Cruise Lines. The Dana School of Music graduate is a member of the Musical Theatre voice faculty at Youngstown State University, and she also teaches at SMARTS in Youngstown and at her private home studio in Howland.

She appeared in Easy Street Productions’ staging of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” at Ford Family Recital Hall, but this will be her first concert at the venue.

“It’s beautiful,” she said. “I’m really, really excited. It’s something I’ve always wanted to have the opportunity to do and am excited to be asked.”

It’s no surprise that the setlist for the Valentine’s Day concert will be filled with love songs.

“You want to choose a nice mix of uptempo songs and ballads,” Beagle said. “I have a catalog of (music) charts I’ve used over the years, ranging from American songbook standards, Italian songs and arias, and golden-era musical theater favorites. It will be a very fast-paced program — one hour, no intermission. And I really wanted to showcase the jazz combo well.”

She will be accompanied by Jack Ciarniello, piano; Don Yallech, drums; Jeff Bremer, bass; Adam Cord, guitar; Tim Harker, saxophone; and Chris Krummel, trumpet.

“Six musicians, that size we felt would be safe to social distance on stage,” she said.

Only about 25 percent of the available seats were sold for the performance. To follow COVID-19 protocols and encourage social distancing, no tickets will be sold at the door, no concessions will be sold and no programs will be distributed to the audience. Face coverings are required for admittance.

Beagle will rehearse with the full band next week. Until then, she’s preparing on her own.

“I have a studio in my home with a big set of mirrors,” she said. “I can kind of stage and block the show for myself. I have rehearsal tracks that are the same as the charts for the musicians, so I’m able to run the entire show from beginning to end and work on my stories and make sure everything is tight.”
