Rock Hall readies made-for-TV induction ceremony

Gray Areas

Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:

• The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will induct its class of 2020 on Saturday with a made-for-television event taking the place of the traditional live ceremony.

COVID-19 restrictions forced the Rock Hall to postpone initially and ultimate scrap its live event, which would have been in Cleveland this year.

The television ceremony created in its place will debut 8 p.m. Saturday on HBO and HBO Max. Warren native Dave Grohl will open the show with an introduction celebrating this year’s inductees — Depeche Mode, the Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston, Nine Inch Nails, The Notorious B.I.G. and T. Rex, along with Ahmet Ertegun Award honorees Jon Landau and Irving Azoff.

The lineup of special guests honoring the inductees includes Luke Bryan, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Miley Cyrus, Billy Gibbons, Don Henley, Jennifer Hudson, Billy Idol, Iggy Pop, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine, Chris Martin, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Brad Paisley, Bruce Springsteen, St. Vincent, Ringo Starr, Gwen Stefani, Charlize Theron and Nancy Wilson.

For those who can’t wait until Saturday, the Rock Hall has a few online events planned this week, including two today.

Landau, a former rock journalist and producer who has managed Bruce Springsteen for decades, will be interviewed at 3:30 p.m. today by Alan Light, SirisuXM’s “Debatable” host, and Jason Hanley, the Rock Hall’s vice president of education and visitor engagement.

Hanley also will host a celebration of the legacy of The Notorious B.I.G. with his son, C.J. Wallace, at 7 p.m. today. Both programs can be viewed on the Rock Hall’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

The inductees from Nine Inch Nails — Trent Reznor, Alessandro Cortini, Robin Finck, Danny Lohner, Atticus Ross, Ilan Rubin and Chris Vrenna — will talk about the band’s history with journalist and director David Farrier in a conversation available at 2 p.m. Friday on NIN’s Twitter, Facebook and YouTube accounts.

And the Rock Hall is creating a virtual red carpet ceremony on Saturday with Carrie Keagan doing live and pre-recorded interviews with inductees and special guests. It starts at 6:45 p.m. Saturday on the Rock Hall’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter accounts.

The exhibit celebrating the class of 2020 opened over the summer and currently can be viewed in person at the Rock Hall or by taking a virtual tour at www.rockhall.com.

• The Rock Hall’s neighbor on the shores of Lake Erie, the Great Lakes Science Center, also has big plans this weekend.

The center, which also is home to the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the International Space Station.

Astronaut Douglas H. Wheelock and former astronaut Terry W. Virts Jr. will answer questions about life in space and other topics that will be streamed throughout the science center on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Interactive programming includes the Space Shuttle Tile cart activity, which will demonstrate the effectiveness of the Orbiter’s Thermal Protection System. An actual tile from the Orbiter fleet will be heated to simulate re-entry temperatures with a propane torch. And visitors will have a chance to play engineer on Mission: Mars Design Challenge and create a collapsible habitat using parts that can fit in the cargo hold of a simulated rocket.
