PNC Broadway series includes ‘Hadestown’ and ‘Oklahoma’

The 2019 Tony Award winners for best musical and best musical revival will be a part of the 2020-21 PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh series, as well as a return engagement of “Hamilton.”

The new season was announced Monday after a public presentation scheduled last month was postponed following the COVID-19 virus outbreak.

According to Marc Fleming, vice president of marketing, communications and Broadway programming for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, “When the world and life as we knew it turned upside down at the beginning of March, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust was forced to delay many events, including our 2020-2021 PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh season announcement. We received overwhelming feedback from Broadway audiences that they couldn’t wait to learn about next season’s shows.

“It’s clear that the arts offer a guiding light in dimmer times and I think everyone is looking forward to gathering to see the curtain rise again in the Cultural District,” Fleming said.

The season opens Aug. 25 at the Benedum Center with “Ain’t Too Proud — The Life and Times of the Temptations,” which chronicles the career of the Motown act that had 42 top 10 hits (including 14 number-one singles) in its career. It received 11 Tony nominations and won for best choreography.

“Hadestown,” winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards including best musical, will run Oct. 27 through Nov. 1

“To Kill a Mockingbird,” Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is scheduled Nov. 24 to 29. Richard Thomas will play lawyer Atticus Finch.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s blockbuster hit “Hamilton” returns Jan. 5, 2021, for a five-week run. The story of Alexander Hamilton and the Founding Fathers, told with a hip hop-influenced score and a multi-racial cast, won 11 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

“The Cher Show,” featuring three women portraying the singer and actor at different stages of her career, will run Feb. 23 to 28, 2021.

A stripped down, sexy revival of the 1943 musical “Oklahoma,” which won the 2019 Tony for best musical revival, is set for March 9 to 14, 2021.

“Pretty Woman: The Musical,” based on the 1990 film starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere is scheduled March 30 to April 4, 2021.

The final show of the 2020-21 season will be a revival of the Lerner & Loewe musical “My Fair Lady,” from April 12 to 18, 2021.

Two other touring productions were announced that aren’t part of the season ticket package — “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” running Sept. 29 to Oct. 4; and “Blue Man Group,” running April 27 to May 2, 2021.

Subscription packages range from $240 to $909 per subscription. Single tickets generally go on sale six to eight weeks in advance. Season tickets are available online at TrustArts.org and by calling 412-456-1390.
