Local talent added to Robins opening event

Homegrown talent will be part of the lineup for the grand opening celebration of the Robins Theatre.

Operatic soprano Cheryl Warfield, classical pianist Dana Kristina-Joi Morgan and blues / rock guitar player and singer Dennis Drummond have been added to the show headlined by retro swing / jazz band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on Jan. 9, 2020.

“We are very proud to present some amazing talent from our own community during our Grand Opening” said Ken Haidaris, president of Sunrise Entertainment, which will manage events at the East Market Street theater that was purchased in 2017 by developer Mark Marvin and his Downtown Development Group.

Warfield has performed more than 15 lead roles in the standard operatic repertoire. In 2019, Cheryl sang the title role in “Suor Angelica” under the baton of Gregory Buchalter in Varna, Bulgaria, and debuted with the South Florida Symphony Orchestra in “Porgy and Bess” with Maestro Sebrina Alfonso.

She has appeared on the Tony Awards, been featured on DVDs of “Live from Lincoln Center” broadcasts and performed as a guest soloist at the NFL Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Canton.

Morgan bridges the classical tradition and other genres into a diverse and creative sound. She is a graduate of the Howard University master of music program and earned her bachelor’s degree in music performance from Capital University Conservatory of Music in Columbus.

She has won numerous accolades and awards of achievement. At the televised 2011 Trumpet Awards, she shared the stage with such legendary performers as Aretha Franklin and Earth, Wind and Fire. Morgan also was a guest artist for the 110th Birthday Celebration of Josephine Baker in Dordogne, France.

Drummond competed on Season 13 of NBC’s competitive reality series “The Voice.” Based in Nashville since graduating from Boston’s Berklee College of Music in 2012, Drummond has worked as a solo artist, songwriter and backing musician for other performers.

Warfield, Morgan and Drummond will perform short sets before the headliner as part of the opening night festivities. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show range from $39 to $99 and are available at the Robins Theatre box office and online through robinstheatre.com.
