Eichers busy preparing for upcoming weddings

We had a good soaking rain during the night but also some lightning and wind. I am so thankful when all is OK after a storm. After our last storm, we think of it more. The sun is shining this morning, but it feels like it’ll be another hot, humid day. Daughters Susan and Verena and grandchildren Jennifer and Ryan have plans to come here today. Verena wants to clean her bedroom and Susan will help me paint ...

Oldest son’s birthday delivers happy memories

July 14 — today, as I write this, our oldest son and fourth child turned 22 years old. How the years fly by. Happy birthday, Benjamin! I had Benjamin at home with Joe’s aunt as my midwife. Benjamin weighed only 4 pounds, 13 ounces and was doing pretty well until he was 2 weeks old. He caught the flu and started dehydrating, so we ended up taking him to the hospital for a few days. After that, he gained ...

Summer heats up and it’s time to pick blueberries

It has cooled down a little, but the thermometer still shows 78 degrees at 9:45 p.m. It was a warm, humid day. One thing I do appreciate is our battery-operated fans. That was something I grew up without. Our gardens are doing well, but oh my, did the weeds ever take over. We need to get out there, but on days like this, I don’t care to. The dog days of summer have come in full blast. Saturday, Dustin ...

Birthday party ‘surprise’ doesn’t go as planned

Our work night at daughter Susan’s house last week proved to be a success. The majority of our church showed up to help with whatever needed to be done. Some fences were put up, flower beds were made, weeding and trimming were done, and the barn was cleaned. Then the ladies washed walls and windows, and all brought in supper. There were casseroles, salads, desserts, iced tea, coffee and lemonade. It was a ...

Preparing wedding food, seeking prayer requests

It is 4:45 a.m. and my husband, Joe, just left for work. Sons Benjamin and Joseph left before that. On Thursday, I had to help with the wedding food prep at the home of neighbors Joas and Susan, for the wedding on Friday of their daughter Carol. Sisters Verena, Emma and I went together. My job was to help cut up the broccoli and cauliflower for the salad. We also cut up the potatoes for the dressing. Quite a ...

Evening with the secret pal

My husband, Joe, and I and son Kevin spent last weekend at daughter Susan’s house. Our community sets up “secret pals” for widows, widowers, people with disabilities, etc. This means Susan has had a secret pal since December. Secret pals send gifts to their receiver for a year. Usually they go from May to May, and then they reveal themselves. Last weekend, they had a secret pal revealing for this past ...

Warm days for tilling, planting

Today was our first day of 80-degree weather this year, and we enjoyed the great outdoors. Daughters Susan and Verena and grandchildren Jennifer and Ryan came last night and are staying again tonight. Susan and I worked on getting everything organized for the garage sale we are having here Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Susan has a lot of baby stuff she’s getting rid of. She has so many nice items that have ...

Appreciating God’s creation in a cold spell

It was snowing most of the day yesterday, although there was not much accumulation. It really does feel good to have heat in the house again. We had let the stove go out over the warmup. I have been busy sewing this week, and that is my plan for today. The wedding in which daughter Loretta and her special friend Dustin are table waiters is Friday already. Daughter Lovina and her special friend Daniel also will ...

Having fun with the Eicher grandchildren

It’s time to pen this column again and words seem hard to come to my mind. Four months ago today is when our dear son-in-law Mose lost his battle to the injuries from the accident. It has been harder for daughter Susan as time goes on. I am sure anyone who has been through this can agree with her. She said, “Sometimes the hurt is so bad that I don’t know if I can keep going. I know God wants me to, and ...
