Enjoy the nice weather

Sons Benjamin, 21, and Joseph, 18, both have left for work. It is 5 a.m. and I decided I’ll write this column while all is still quiet. The weather has taken a big change overnight. Yesterday, and for over a week, we have had nice, sunny, warm weather. Now this morning the temperature is in the lower 40s and seems to gradually be dropping. We took advantage of the nice weather by raking leaves, the men ...

Leaves, hunting and pie

We are having nice, sunny autumn weather with temperature in the 60s by the end of the day. It’s a good time to get the leaves raked and the yard cleaned up before the snow flies. We did have a coating of snow on Sunday, but it didn’t accumulate much. I also have some tulip bulbs I want to plant this week. The leaves are absolutely amazing in their fall colors — scenery that only our Master Artist can ...

Fall harvest and canning in full swing as year winds down

We have entered October, which brings us closer to the end of 2020. Leaves are falling, farmers are harvesting corn, gardens are being cleared out and tilled. All of these events are a sure sign that autumn is here. We went to the local U-pick orchard and picked grapes and our supply of apples. I have lots of jars of grape juice concentrate again now. We put the grapes in two big steamers / juicers and the ...

A peek into the family’s chores

Here’s a page from Lovina Eicher’s diary: 4 a.m. — My alarm rings. I get up to make breakfast for son Joseph, 18. He helps me fill his water cooler and pack his lunch. His work crew is leaving early because they are building a pole barn close to Lake Erie, which is a two-hour drive away. For breakfast I make scrambled eggs with bacon, green pepper and onions. 4:30 a.m. — Joseph leaves for work. I take ...

Happy birthday to son Kevin

A happy 15th birthday to the last of our eight children! Son Kevin’s birthday is today as I write this. It’s amazing how the years fly by. I thought it would be interesting to share the column daughter Elizabeth wrote to help me out after Kevin was born. She was 11 years old and in fifth grade. Written by Elizabeth in September 2005: “I told Mom I would write for her this week as she’s very busy ...

August wedding feast

Friday, Aug. 14, was daughter Elizabeth and Timothy’s fifth wedding anniversary. Happy anniversary to them and wishing them many more happy healthy years together. May God continue to be their guide. They have three children: Abigail, who will turn 4 on Sept. 10; Timothy (T.J.), 1 1/2 years; and baby Allison, 7 months. So very precious to us! Allison is so petite but so full of energy. T.J. can climb ...

Blessed to have the rain

Recently, we received more than an inch of much-needed rain. The grass was turning brown, so the rain will help the grass and the crops in the fields. The irrigation system has been running in the big farmers’ fields. In some places, the water from the irrigation flies over the road. When we use the covered buggy for transportation, we can close the doors and windows to pass through those places, but when we ...

If at first you don’t succeed, try again

Another week has passed and not much has changed around here. We did have the temperature go down in the 20s one night. My husband, Joe, didn’t expect it to get that cold and had his plants in the greenhouse. Unfortunately, it is too late for some of his plants. It was so disappointing for him on his first year of planting indoors. He was ready to just give it up, but such is life at times. If at first we ...

Trying to make most of the time at home

We are all still home from the “stay home, stay safe” order due to the coronavirus. We were to host church services this past Sunday, but church services in our community were postponed until further notice. Maybe too often we take going to church for granted. It didn’t seem right not to meet with our fellow church members to worship God. We were home reading from the Scriptures in the Bible, still ...

Having fun with children in winter

Today as I write this, baby Allison is already two months old. She’s so petite but very active. Last Sunday, I was holding her in church and she made so many facial expressions. When we started singing, she wasn’t sure if she should be sad or smile. It was so cute to see her smile then change to a frown and almost cry then smile again. Such little sweet innocent angels. She has brought much joy to ...
