The Cafaro conundrum

By Todd Franko (Contact)

Published August 2, 2010

The Columbus Dispatch had a good story over the weekend amid the fallout of the Cafaro indictments.

What to do with all their campaign donations?

It's easy when it's one political side dumping on another. But in the case of the Cafaros, their money -- more than $1.5 million since 2000 -- has gone to both political parties.

Thanks for posting article. The farther away from Youngstown the candidate is, the less likely the candidate is to be corrupted by the Cafaros. National and statewides are not going to fall under their spell so easily.

What we REALLY NEED is for the Vindy to is go back through all the campaign records from Mahoning and Trumbull Co. the last 25 years and print ALL the names of the LOCAL candidates that have taken Cafaro money. Start with 2010 so we know who not to vote for.

Of course the illegal money JJ funneled to his daughter (which she of course knew NOTHING about) or that Flora gave to judges in the backseat of a car won't show up, but the campaign reports are still important to see.

Do it as a collaboration with Tribune if that sort of thing can happen. But the public needs to know.

How ridiculous it is that Capri is telling people not to accept money from her family now. Does she include herself?

Todd:

How about some investigative reporting on Oak Hill laying out everything for us.

1. Who were commissioners when original contract with Cafaros was signed?
2. Someone ask Lisa Antonini if she made a deal. She can only say "yes" "no" "no comment" or ignore you. 3 of the 4 responses mean yes.
3. How about a list of Cafaro contributions (the ones that were reported, anyway) to office holders over last 25 years.
4. Being that Vindy has demanded Sciortino & McNally resign, how about printing the specifics of the charges that have not been made public. And being that the specifics are not yet public, how does Vindy know those facts? Or maybe Vindy doesn't know those facts? If Vindy doesn't, maybe you can have story about why they should resign even though Vindy doesn't know what exactly they are charged with.
5. If it is the seriousness of the charges as your reason for them to resign, what happened to innocent until proven guilty?
Remember Ray Donovan, from the Reagan admin? Charged, not guilty.
Duke LaCrosse team. Olympic Park bombing suspect Richard Jewyl. Anthrax mailings suspect Robert Hatfield. Joe Vukovich. Barry Bonds. All examples of people arrested but found not guilty or ruined by the media and never convicted. And let's not forget all those people who we read about that spent years, sometimes decades, in prison, and then it turns out they are not guilty.
