Our deepest sympathies to the Mooney community

By Todd Franko (Contact)

Published December 6, 2009

The news Sunday that two Cardinal Mooney students were dead from gunshot wounds was the kind of news that stops everything that you are doing for a moment.
Two young people dying is heart-wrenching at any moment.
But it is intensely numbing coming off the euphoria the Mooney community celebrated all weekend following Friday's state title football victory.
As we worked Sunday to understand the tragedy and report it in a responsible way, every step seemed to become more painful.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends and the entire Mooney community.

Todd--

I hope to see messages with similar sentiments every time a school suffers a loss going into the future. These senseless occurrences seem to happen regularly these days and while I believe all of Youngstown agrees with your sentiment, I only wonder where this direct, public outreach was for the East cheerleader or the countless other schools that have suffered similar tragedies in recent months and years.

The people of Youngstown and your newspaper are in DENIAL. The underpinnings and events that led to this tragedy need to be fully exposed and transparent to be understood and to prevent it from happening again.

I recall that cheerleader being on the front page more than once. I understand that all deaths are a tragedy, but when a person dies from undiagnosed medical problems, it is easier to understand. When 17 and 18 year old males are involved in a murder-suicide, it is a bit more shocking, and requires more questions that normal.

Making statements such as this one - no matter how good they sound - are a detriment to getting the story and journalism integrity.

Get the story. Don't pussyfoot around the issue.
