Why didn’t God stop the massacre?

By Bertram de Souza (Contact)

Published December 16, 2012

Untitled document

As Christians around the world prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the prince of peace, the massacre of 20 children (they were either 6 or 7 years old) and six adults in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., has cast a pall over one of the most important days in Christendom.

Since the Friday morning shooting spree — the gunman, Adam Lanza, killed himself in the school — the question “Why?” has filled the pages of newspapers and the airwaves.

Why did Lanza do it?

Why did he select Sandy Hook Elementary?

Why did he fatally shoot his mother in their home before he took her guns and drove her car to the killing field?

And, why did Lanza select the youngest children in the school?

But the question that has not been asked is this: Why did a loving God allow the innocent to be the targets? Reports indicate that each child was shot multiple times. The adults, including the principal and teachers, were killed trying to protect the young ones.

Where was God?

Theologians and experts in religion will offer persuasive reasons for why God cannot be blamed for what occurred in Sandy Hook school, but those won’t answer the question: If God won’t protect the children, who will?

The adults in the school tried to come between the gunman and the young victims, but they were summarily dispatched.

Even the most faithful must have moments of doubt when confronted with the kind of carnage that occurred last week in a place that should have been a safe haven for the young.

"The adults in the school tried to come between the gunman and the young victims, but they were summarily dispatched."

But because it was a "Gun Free Zone", they didn't have the tools necessary to put a quick end to the situation.

Not bad. In back to back blogs you've stuck it to the white man and now have essentially asked the Christians of the world the same lines you only hear in films: "Where is your God now?!"

Do we have to wait until Easter to hear about Jews? What will you do in between?

Its a shame we can't charge "god" in criminal court.

How many people like this woman do you meet in your daily life? The conspiracy-theorists. The survivalists. The gun-nuts. Anti-government zealots. I would love to post the names and addresses of all that I am aware of on a website. It wouldn't be a small number. Our country is up to it's ears in these lunatics spouting their craziness and living it out among us. All of them ticking time-bombs. When presented with the right set of circumstances, their absurd views of society and reality can release their paranoia on innocents. It doesn't come down to gun-control; it comes down to lunatic control. We wrongly rounded up law-abiding Japanese during war-time. We need to round-up these nuts because they are waging war on society. Treat them like Al-Qaeda or the Taliban in our midst.
Here's what we do. Anyone who has an assault weapon or more than two hunting rifles and 2 handguns has to report each and every one of those weapons to authorities. There are gun "aficionados" and then there are the paranoid nuts. Since we can't differentiate between the two, unless you give up the restricted weapons you and your weapons get relocated to Texas or Alaska. In Texas pre-fab housing units will be set up at 25 foot intervals all along the border with Mexico. All of the "gun-nuts" who fantasize about being Navy Seals or Dirty Harry can patrol the border and get in real fire-fights with members of the Mexican Drug Cartel. That should fulfill their gun fantasies and their animus toward immigrants.
Those sent to Alaska will be welcomed by Tod and Sarah Palin to the great Northern Gun Paradise. Guns will be allowed everywhere, in schools, churches, fast-food joints, government buildings, car dealerships, drugstores, bars, etc. All the gun-nuts can have at it against each other; to the last man and woman.
We can't control guns, but we can round up those who have too many guns and too much ammunition. Also keep in mind that these nuts don't restrict themselves to guns as the bombing in Oklahoma City can attest. Well they can exercise their right to have armories in every home against each other and away from rational individuals.

When God created us in his own image, he also gave us some of his power when he gave us free will. If we didn't have free will on earth, what good would be His creation? The problem becomes, when you combine free will with pure selfishness, you get pure evil and it was on display last Friday.

Where was God? He was in the face of every one of those innocent children. He was in the school principal and counselor that protected the children. He is there for anyone that chooses to use their free will for acts of love, kindness, and charity. But, our society is hell-bent on not letting us teach our children morals in school. We can't teach that there are certain things that are only black and white but everything is shades of gray. No, the Ten Commandments are verbotten because that would espouse some sort of religion. Friday is what happens when we permit our society to drift away from God and his moral tenets.

What really sickens me is the idea that god gets all the credit for good things but never is responsible for any of the bad.

That is because the good things only come from God, nitwit.

LtMacGowan,

Everything comes from God - both good and evil. God permits evil so that a greater good may come from it.

God's direct will is all good. His permissive will allows acts like what happened Friday.

You (unfortunately) make light of all these things, but the question of the presence of evil in the world is a great mystery.

And as a Catholic, Bert should know this.

Another GREAT article Bertram!

A loving God??? Bertram, you don't know anything about the bible. The catholic, christian bible god is the most violent and narcissist god ever brought to life.

A loving God is forgiving of all, especially his own children, correct? If not, then God could not be loving, correct?

A Marine stationed overseas with more than 14 kills to his credit told me, "God wasn't where he was stationed". Aren't we taught that god fights for good?

A LOVING God allows the innocent to be killed?

Babies born in Mexico without brains, buildings and babies blown apart in Oklahoma, babies killed in their home on Youngstowns' streets.

It's not a question of where is the LOVING God. It's a question of where are the people? Especially, where are the christians and the catholics?

I know where the christians and the catholics are.

They are hiding in their homes. They are hiding once a year at The Covelli Center.

They are hiding behind their yearly get togethers and seminars, all spouting how bad it is and how they all must band together, under god, for change and become more involved.

They are hiding behind parking lot murders and out of nowhere vatican decrees. They are hiding behind blameless politicians and hiding behind their spiritual power in finger pointing at anyone who doesn't hide with them.

And it is said christ, in end times, will return to fight the antichrist and we will know the new christ as he will display a knife between his teeth and slay every non believer and the blood will wallow in the streets.

A LOVING God Bertram?

My, my, my. I didn't know you wrote dry humor.

Happy Holidays and Merry Xmas!

The only thing that God, or nature, or evolution, or whatever you want to call it, gave us humans that differentiates us from brutes- is our intelligence. We should use it to try to get to the bottom of these things, because that's all we have, ultimately.

Woody Allen, in one of his films, had the line: "God is a Practical Joker that likes to play Hide and Seek" That about says it.

Excuse the blasphemy, but I don't think God give a S--t about us one way or another. That's the awful truth.

In my post I wanted to use the exact, pungent expletive and I think it would have read better. But the Vindy in it's never-ending quest for family values and morality forced me to use Sh--t instead. I apologize.

The last few shooting sprees were done by obviously mentally ill individuals who- legally or not- got their hands on assault rifles. Society has gotten out of the mental health business because of the cost. ie Ohio has closed all but a few beds. Remember Woodside and Massilon? Ten dollar trigger locks might stop some of these massacres, or a gun safe. Evidence indicates this kindergarten murderer may have been upset that his mother was seeking info to have him committed. Ask any family that has tried it- it is not always quick or easy to have a family member commited. And even if it is done, it might just be for a short term. The shooter's mother should have secured the weapons when she questioned her sons stability. She paid the highest price for her mistake. BUT SO DID 20 OTHERS. I see no need for an assault type rifle in private hands/no need for armor piercing ammo for civilians. Been a gun collector for 45 yrs., recently began carefully selling mine off. 2 shotguns, 2handguns is plenty to defend my castle[ha ha]. I've only got 2 hands to shoot with. Have been an NRA member for 30 plus yrs., and dont always go along with their stand on issues. Just some of my thoughts on this complex issue.

Its simple. Because god doesn't exist. If anything Mankind is the closest thing to a deity there is.

I believe that mankind has it within ourselves to become "god". I believe that NOTHING is out of reach of humanity given enough time, knowledge, and wisdom.

Look at what we've accomplished in the 20th century that would make our early predecessors think us to be deities. We've eradicated smallpox a disease that has killed more humans than every war in our history combined. We've left the confines of Earth and begin to explore the universe, We've created Synthetic cells that divide and live, we've mapped out the human genome. Imagine what we can accomplish in another 2,000 years.

That is as long as we aren't dragged back into another 700 year long Religious inspired Dark Age where knowledge was Anathema.
