We're at the turn for our 2011 "18 Greatest Golf Holes of the Valley - Reader's Choice" edition.
With that, the focus is really turning toward the junior and adult "Greatest Golfer of the Valley" tournaments.
The adults are Aug. 26, 27 and 28. We're about 75 percent full with just 2 months to go. Get in now to be safe. Click here for more details.
But before the adults take aim, the juniors hit the links first in July to compete for the Greatest.
Three courses — Diamondback Golf Course, Tamer Win Golf & Country Club, Tam O’Shanter -- are hosting qualifiers. See all the information below.
A clarification for the courses as they keep getting asked:
"The Greatest" competition is for the oldest age bracket at each site, and as long as you are 18 through Aug. 31 this year, you are eligible.
At each site, there are younger divisions to enter in and compete for that day. But to advance to the Greatest junior finals on July 31, you must compete in the oldest division at each site.
The Greatest Golfer of the Valley tournament sponsored by Farmers National Bank and The Vindicator will branch out this year by adding a junior division, giving boys and girls a chance at the title “Greatest Junior Golfer in the Valley.” Additionally, four players will get to compete for $5,000 in scholarships provided by PowerBilt Golf and Golf Headquarters in Boardman and Niles. The Greatest will be crowned on July 31 at Trumbull Country Club. But to get a chance at the Greatest and the scholarships, players must enter one of the following qualifiers:
Diamondback Golf Course
Boys and girls divisions
July 8 & 11
Tamer Win Golf & Country Club
Boys - July 8
Girls - July 11
Cost: $23 (18 holes and lunch)
Cost: $25 (18 holes, lunch, balls)
At each site, the top four girls and top four boys golfers will advance to the Greatest Junior Golfer of the Valley Championship.
The Greatest Junior Golfer of the Valley finals are July 31 at 1 p.m. at Trumbull Country Club.
Each tourney is open to any players who are under age 18 as of Aug. 31, 2011. All entrants MUST reside in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Lawrence or Mercer counties. Registration for any qualifier is handled at each course.
The four players who will share $5,000 in scholarships provided by PowerBilt Golf and Golf Headquarters in Boardman and Niles will be awarded based on players who complete an online application. The application is still being formalized so check back here soon. Candidates must show academic and community success, in addition to good golf skills.
While divisions may vary at each site, the Greatest qualifier is for players competing in the top divisions at each site.
At each site, the top four golfers in each division will advance to The Greatest Junior Golfer of the Valley Championship to be played:
