This is the week for all the last minute shoppers to do their thing. Wine is one of the best and easiest last minute gifts for those who always find themselves searching for gifts at the 11th hour. Part one of the holiday buying guide focused on California, so today we'll take a look at Italy (and one from Spain)
Giving Italian wine is often especially appreciated in our Valley due to the large Italian-American community and overall appreciation for Italian food and culture. Here are six selections that are sure to please anyone receiving them this holiday season:
NV Castello Del Poggio Prosecco $14
Bright straw / yellow in color with an intensely fruity nose bursting with golden apple and white flowers. Fresh and fruity on the palate with enticing minerality. Well balanced and elegant.
2014 Principi Di Butera Insolia DOC $15
This lively Sicilian white is a great gift for any wine lover looking for something different. Aromas of fresh apples, tangerine and green flowers. Dry with medium body and flavors of citrus fruits, almond and stone leading to a crisp finish.
2014 Codice Citra Caroso Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC $22
Complex aromas of red fruits and spice accented by hints of french vanilla. Rich and full bodied with flavors of red cherry, plum and baking spices. Great value at this price point.
2014 Tenuta Frescobaldi Di Castiglioni Toscana IGT $24
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, this Tuscan classic is sure to please. Aromas of mixed red berries, cocoa, and tobacco. Flavors of currant, blackberry, and fresh ground coffee lead to a warm, round finish.
2015 Le Volte Dell' Ornelllaia Toscana IGT $30
A blend of 67% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 13% Sangiovese. Aromas of black cherry, cassis and licorice indicate harmonious integration. Flavors of bing cherry, blueberry, and subtle spice with silky tannins and meaty texture.
2011 Beronia Rioja Reserva $28
I loved this offering from Spain so much that I had to include it in the buying guide! Elegant and deep garnet color with a complex nose hinting at cinnamon and chocolate. Fresh and powerful on the palate with dark fruits and toffee on the finish.
Most of these wines are available at the better independent wine shops in our area and even some grocery stores. Giving the gift of Italian wine is sure to please, and they won't even know you bought it at the last minute. Cheers and happy holidays!
