MVBRB Review: Steel Trolley Diner

The Steel Trolley Diner, Lisbon

The Steel Trolley Diner was originally built in 1954 as one of the last diners of the Jerry O’Mahoney Company, known then as one of the largest diner manufacturers in the US.

The STD was first moved to Salem, OH, operating as Aldom’s Diner for 24 years before finally ending up in Lisbon in 1979. The STD has been open continuously ever since and is one of the last surviving original diners.
When we walked in to the packed trolley car, we noticed the shiny decor, and were greeted with that 1950s diner atmosphere. The waitresses wore the 1950s poodle skirts and treated us better than family. You can sit in a booth or at the diner counter -- and watch as they prepare your food.
There are more than 30 burgers on the menu. From the National Hamburger Festival award winning burgers; 1st place 2009- Marley (Jamaican jerk sauce, orange chipotle mayo, lettuce and tomato), 2nd 2007- Johnny Appleseed (grilled onions, shredded cheddar and homemade apple pie jam), 3rd 2007-Elvis (bacon, peanut butter, and banana jam, served on a buttered grilled bun) and 1st 2006-BBQ (BBQ sauce, onions and lots of shredded cheddar cheese), to the rest of the page-and-a-half of burgers, you can’t go wrong picking any of them.
Your burgers are brought out with the buns branded with the signature "STD" and complemented with an overflowing basket of original fries. You can even choose sweet potato fries if you like.
We had to try the award winners (two of us had a Marley and one had a BBQ burger.) And we all agreed the sauces combined with the lightly seasoned beef and fresh toppings were mouthwatering.
"The burgers are well worthy of the awards and you won’t go away hungry," said Scott Long. "The Trolley has a great atmosphere."
When you are craving that late night burger (they are open 24 hours), and some award winning pie, then the Steel Trolley is the place for you.
Our special guest, and favorite freelance writer (Valley Mag article), Sue Mellish said, "the crowd thins out a little later in the day."

Enjoy the original diner atmosphere and have a great burger

my wife and i stopped at the steel trolley diner today for the 1st time after reading your great comments. we got there at 1pm and the lunch rush was over. we both ordered standard burgers with tomato lettuce and onion. the buns were cold and had no brand on the top. the fries were greasy and not crisp. i also ordered a bowl of soup that had to be heated in the microwave first, and was still luke warm. the waitress was friendly, the prices really reasonable the music on the juke box fantastic. the place needs a good scrub down though. we will be back to give it one more try.

DO NOT EAT HERE! Disgusting slob cooking the food!
I have been a fan of the Steel Trolley Diner for decades! My grandparents used to go here...
I visited the Steel Trolley Diner with my wife on Sunday of the Johnny Appleseed Festival and expected to have a wonderful meal like I always have in the past... WRONG!
We sat right in front of the grill which never bothered me in the past. However, after sitting for a while, I noticed the lady working on the grill was wearing gloves and was never changing her gloves. She would simply wipe her gloves on her pants and shirt and continue on. I noticed this for about 10 minutes. She would place fries in the fryer, then put lettuce and cheese on a sandwich, never changing her gloves, only wiping them on her pants and shirt.
I honestly didn’t think much of this since fry grease isn’t going to cause harm when it is in some lettuce or cheese.
She then handed us our sandwiches and I began eating. After I began eating, I saw her open the fridge, pick up raw chicken, place the chicken in the fryer, then hand someone a ketchup bottle and hand us silverware… ALL WITHOUT CHANGING HER GLOVES!
I asked “Excuse me, did you just pickup raw chicken and not change your gloves?”, She replied with some odd comment and walked away. (I would hope she went to the back to wash her hands finally put on new gloves.)
A few minutes later, I witnessed her putting raw beef and raw sausage on the grill and continue making sandwiches again without changing gloves.

I am sorry, but anyone who works with food knows not to cross contaminate. I sometimes let small things slide like fryer grease on other food items, but raw meats is not acceptable!
This women should be disciplined and trained about proper food safety! The manager should be disciplined and trained about proper food safety! And if they don’t learn, they should not be working in the food industry, period!
You, Steel Trolley Diner, have lost a lifetime customer and I am sure several other lifetime customers as word of this fiasco spreads through my family and friends.
I only hope no one gets sick from this unsanitary restaurant. If they do, management and owners should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!
