Joe Scalzo and Bob Hannon, the voice of YSU football, discuss whether the Mid-American Conference could have any advantages for YSU.
Akron plays in the MAC and their attendance is abysmal. Why? Because they lose. If YSU starts playing for national championships again, attendance would increase. Overall, there might be a cost savings for all sports if YSU joined the MAC, and if that's the goal, fine. But if you want to increase attendance at football games, there is only one solution. Win. A losing YSU team in the MAC will do no better attendance-wise than they are doing now no matter how many "natural geographic rivals" they play.
I'd love to see YSU join the MAC for all the reasons Bob gave and more, but...I'm not sure that the MAC would see any real benefit. Though to be honest I'm not sure what quantifiable benefits third tier conferences like the MAC (without multi-million dollar tv deals) even look for with a new addition. I'm assuming all MAC schools spend waay more money than they earn with their athletics departments.
