I'll comment on Bush but I don't think Obama has had enough time and Republicans working against him so he can't do what he really wants, he has to cooperate. On the other hand Bush should be charged and made to answer to his stupidity when in office. He was the worst president we ever had besides his father. I am a Republican, by the way, but I don't vote that way down the line. It depends on the person running. I think that things should be changed for someone running for office. They should not have to come up with millions of dollars because that eliminates people who might be much better but cannot raise that kind of money.
As far as the YPD, don't make me laugh. They not only get their overtime, don't go to calls that are on the "bad" side of town because they are literally afraid so they go to the suburbs and raid homes, take most of the money, some of the drugs and most live in very nice homes with all the money they extort. I am not guessing, I have proof that this is what they do and it is not just the police, it goes all the way to the top in Youngstown.
The only thing that changed in Youngstown after they "got rid of" the mob is the people extorting money from the ones that can afford it. If you can't you can bet your going to jail for a long time. For the record, they will never get rid of the mob, they are just not showing their faces.
@whitesabbath - You are absolutely right about the hair samples and blood draws being the only way to go for drug testing. The only problem with that is that it is very expensive to send blood and/or hair samples away to a lab. Who is going to pay for the cost of this kind of drug testing.
It is a scary thought that it is coming to this. People under 18 are the responsibility of the parent, not the school to determine if there is a drug problem. The people who love and care about these kids should be the ones to help them whether it is rehab (which does not work for most alcoholics and/or addicts), therapy, etc.
You cannot force an addict to stop. Maybe you can control a minor for a period of time but if someone has an addiction and denies it or simply admits it but also does not want to quit will find a way to get their drug of choice.
If I am an adult with all my faculties working correctly I should be able to do with my body what I wish. Drugs will never disappear, drug pushers who are put away will have someone to take their place the same day.
For some reason people understand food, gambling or shopping addictions and they don't insist that these overweight, uncontrolled people are lazy junkies that are disgusting and should all be thrown in jail for the rest of their lives. As the saying goes "it is not what you are eating, it is what is eating you". You find out the underlying problem and you might be successful in overcoming whatever addictions one may have whether it is food, gambling, alcohol or drugs.
People are so judgmental when it comes to drugs and most don't know a thing about addictions. It is a horrible way to live and people would rather lock them up and throw away the key, unless of course this happens to be a loved one. People have no compassion for the less fortunate, or the injured at work and people who simply cannot find jobs. Somehow, though, if it touches their lives their opinions change because now they know what it is like to walk in very uncomfortable shoes.
Who are these morons who want to do nothing but build more and more prisons so we can just put all the addicts in jail for life. Is this a solution? I am appalled mostly with the arrogant people with power and money who think it is okay to snort cocaine on the weekends and on Monday go about arresting, prosecuting and sentencing people who are doing the same thing.
i once had a high profile case in youngstown while paul gains was prosecutor and dennis serisky was assistant prosecutor< i think? the reason i put i think is because neither of these men ever said a word throughout the entire case. basically they stood around and let a detective literally arrest me, prosecute me, and sentence me. they basically are the drug task forces puppets. A 4 year old could of prosecuted this case. i was caught doing the same exact thing as a friend of mine. we both were caught trafficking the same amount of drugs. Now my point isn't we shouldn't of been punished my point is the sentences weree so lopsided that it shows that this detective disliked me more than the other kid cause he was sentenced to 2 years in a minimum security prison and i recieved a ten year term. and no the first person didnt co-operate in no way shape or form and according to the vindicator i fully co-operated but still got the maximum sentence of 10 years. yes for the exact same crime? the only thing i was given was a judicial release after 7 years. is this a fair justice system. i,m now approaching my 4th year on probation without any trouble. the only trouble i got is finding a job. another example of the bias of certain people and the power the task force has over our judges and parole system is i have a friend who had 2 years of parole and was arrested 2 times in the first year while i haven,t been in any trouble. he was let off parole after 1 year for his good behavior and i have been turned down every attempt i filed to be let off. my supplier was sentenced to 4 years for supplying 2 drug rings. the guy that got off parole in 1 year was also sentenced at my time. i guess the cops liked him because this was his third trafficking case and just got out of prison in Pennsylvania for trafficking in drugs and was out on parole. he got caught on 7 buys having a firearm in his possesion, high speed chase, possesion of drugs, drug instruments, and he got a whopping 3 years. i guess we are not judged for the crimes we commit but how much our task force likes you and how much power they have in our courts. I never claimed i was innocent or thought i should not be punished for my acts all i wanted was to be treated fairly and because of a couple task force cops that were not fond of me this is the way it goes. So for all of you out there thinking about entering in the world of drug trafficking i can only stress make sure you stay on the cops good side cause if they dont like you its lights out but if they do you have hope. Believe me cause i had a top notch attorney that could not believe what he was seeing and had no explanation for me cause there was no explanation, it is black and white and there is no racial pun in this last statement cause we were all white guys from the suburbs. So all you black guys out there that think you get bigger sentences this is definately not true.
Really Mr. DeSouza, you have got to be kidding. You are still ranting about Traficant when you have all those corrupt, crooked politicians in Mahoning County to pick on? Problem is, you don't turn on the ones who either put money in YOUR pocket or do you favors.
How about exposing these disgusting individuals? I dare you to expose just one of the higher ups but I know that will never happen. What is the saying "never sh*t where you live" or something to that effect. There is an eerie silence whenever I bring up "corrupt" or "crooked" politicians. You used to slam these guys (am I not right Stan because you are one of the silent ones?) in your editorials back in the day. You are either afraid or your with them. Can't see any other answer. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen (got that one right).
As for Kelly, I would never assume that I know what he has going on in his life and would be the last person to judge him. He is doing what he feels is right for himself and his family. Ohio does have he best fans and it is hard for them to let go. I don't blame him for not wanting to get his head hammered so people will be happy.
dodge2002 - I am assuming by your username that you perhaps graduated in 2002. Don't you think you are a little old to be playing games on an internet newspaper? Most people are trying to use what little freedom of speech we have left.
Maybe it would be a good idea if you did what Mr. Richards suggests in his article - "apply ourselves to achieving some small victories each and every day". In other words make yourself a productive member of the human race, whether it is writing songs or music or something really needed - like finding someone you like running for office who is honest and supporting him/her. Hell, Dodge, maybe you could run for something yourself - God knows we need some new, young blood not afraid to shake things up a bit in Ytown. Why limit yourself to getting a rise out of people. I have tried it and it does not work. Ytowners are too apathetic.
R1200GS - That is beautiful and I think whitesabbath is right - One nation, under surveillance, with wire taps, urine and DNA testing for all . . .
TonyB I have not been to the web site yet but it sounds like at least someone is trying to make a difference and having it NOT be affiliated with the City or County Courts is essential. I no longer live in Mahoning County but have family there so I do care what happens.
Besides, is anyone familiar with some of the ways that one can get around a drug test? Where there is a will there is way and there are plenty. People sell clean urine for good money. There are also pills you can take, for males there is a hook-up that you would not believe so that they can urinate clean urine at the right temperature. Just go on the internet and you can see all sorts of apparatus and ways to come up with clean urine.
Boardman is just going to make it a challenge for some of these kids. Don't they do their "homework" before suggesting something like this?
How very ironic that your username is "Freeatlast" because you are slowly and surely losing every freedom that America fought so hard to retain. I can pretty much bet that you are not a veteran. Can you imagine a soldier coming back from spending one or two years in Iraq getting shot at so that we can be "free" just to find out that he/she cannot even smoke anywhere anymore but our homes (and I waiting for that to be banned too).
His/her son or daughter has a soccer or baseball game playing "organized sports" instead of the kickball games the neighborhood used to have when I was young in the 60's. This particular soldier goes to light up a cigarette in the middle of the outdoor soccer/baseball field, well away from anyone who might be near enough to have a problem with any smoke that might get in someone's eyes (in the middle of a huge ballpark).
Suddenly the smoke police come up to him/her and says "hey, didn't you know that smoking is prohibited in this ballpark"? I know if I just got back from anywhere risking my neck to protect my freedom and so-called "rights" I would be pretty upset if someone told me I could not even smoke in an outdoor ballpark. Yes, I am a nonsmoker but I am also thin and anyone who takes away my rights because it is unhealthy for me is butting their nose in my business.
I don't go to the person sitting next to me in a restaurant who is obviously overweight, if not obese, and tell them they are offending me because they are eating fried, greasy, unhealthy food and it is making me sick so would they please refrain from doing so. Or maybe I could go about finding out how we can get overweight people banned from going to McDonalds and Burger King and while we are at it why don't we just make it a law?
What the hell, all our other rights are slowly and surely being taken away from us all in the name of "mommy and daddy just want to make sure that you are doing what is right with your body". I am not a child and I know what is good and what is bad for my body. I should be able to put in and/or take out of my own body what I want to. I don't believe in abortion but I respect a woman's right to do what she feels is right for her own predicament.
Yes, let us leave it to the schools, once again, because the parents are not home, to urine test every kid going to school. I bet the places that do the tests will be all for it, and while we are at it you better urine test the teachers (yes, I know they are supposed to be) because in my eyes it is far worse for teachers to be under the influence than the children they are teaching.
I know, whitesabbath (I would love to know the reason you named yourself that name - did you used to like Black Sabbath and changed your life or something?), that you are talking about women on welfare who have babies, most with the father taking off. This is a big problem and I would never even try to pretend I know what to do about this problem and understand your anger.
Peacelover, I would not have a baby if the case was that I would have to leave it with someone who I did not know at six weeks. I could never have done this and as I said - if you cannot afford to stay home with your child until school age, or at the minimum three years old then you should not have any, period.
I agree that maternity leave should be much longer but right now with the economy, no jobs, etc. women who do have a job and can get maternity leave probably feel lucky to have that much. If you have a decent paying job then why not save some money for when you do have a child you may be able to at least stay with that child for six months or so.
I know what it is like to sacrifice and believe me I have sacrificed a whole hell of a lot for my one and only child and so far it seems to be well worth it. My husband and I may not have any money when retirement time comes but that is just another thing that I felt was less important than my child being able to go to college.
It seems to me that it is the breakdown of the family that is reason this whole world is going to hell in a hand basket. At least it is an important part of everyday life that is slowly but surely being broken apart. The children are the ones who suffer, and the children are the next generation of leaders. Are they well adjusted human beings or are they screwed up, alcoholic and/or drug addicted generation who go to their therapists on a regular basis?
All I am saying is that someone has to put values and morals in a child (or not) and you better know who that someone is and what their values and morals are before you put that six week old baby in their arms.
And peacelover, I know more mothers who could stay home if they gave up some luxuries than mothers that absolutely have to work to make ends meet. I cannot remember the last time I went out to dinner, let alone had steak. My son is 6'3" tall and eats a lot - if I don't feel that there is enough for all, I say I already ate and go without. Have done this many times but what are you going to do?
Breastfeeding your infant is the best thing a mother can do for her child. It gives them antibodies so that they get sick less, have less ear, nose and throat problems, not to mention that these breastfed children get sick far less than babies who are bottle fed.
Breastfeeding is really much easier, far less expensive and you bond with your child for life. Mothers complain about being sore, which only lasts a couple of days. What mothers really hate though is that they have to be there for that child 24/7 for the first six weeks and they don't like that. They don't want to be tied down and what happens when they go back to work so someone else can raise them?
Times are changing and we were getting back to natural childbirth, having the father involved as much as possible but it does not change the fact that these mothers are not willing to sacrifice that expensive, new car, that big house and nice vacations to stay home with their child or children. Why have them if someone else is going to teach them whatever values and morals they want. I don't see any maternal mothers anymore, just career women. It is a shame and one reason why this world is going the direction it is.
I am personally offended by what Mr. DeSouza has written because it would not take a whole lot of time or effort to find out that Paul Gains is as about as corrupt as he could be and keeps getting re-elected because the people of Mahoning County blindly vote for him thinking he is some kind of hero or something. It seems as though for some odd, strange reason Mr. DeSouza also feels that way.
I have tried to get in touch with Mr. DeSouza about the corruption in Youngstown, not only with Mr. Gains, but with other people in positions they should not be in if they are on the take. People just assume this happens and don't care unless it touches their lives.
It is also funny that whenever I do make a comment about how corrupt Mahoning County is or something to that effect, there are people on these sites that try to change the subject or move the conversation in a different direction. I see very little said about what really goes on. People don't even seem to think much when the Feds will not let go of over 2,000 hours of tapes. Don't you question in your minds why that is? Do you really believe it is because they did not want to prosecute the Cafaros and others? They can refile the charges. Is there some reason why some people cannot read between the lines?
I have spoken before in other threads and have commented on pretty much nothing else because I no longer live in Youngstown, but I have a lot of family that does and most of the people I speak with know what goes on. The problem seems to be that they feel that what they get instead could be worse. Try going through a justice system that feels your guilty unless proven innocent unless, of course, you happen to have money in which case there is no case.
I wonder how far some of these "honest" politicians would make it if "folks that know or suspect problems with them to push out in public their knowledge or suspected misdeed theories". People don't realize the power some of these people have. Are you going to risk your job, family or your reputation to go up against a group of people who have the authority to do what they want to you and yours?
Mr. DeSouza - Why do you protect Paul Gains? It seems as though maybe you owe him or he done you a favor or two. See how things can look skewed just by putting questions in peoples' brains? I would love to know what his response to these questions would be. I would welcome him to respond privately. Somehow I know I will get nothing but silence, or worse.
Will new police chief be up to task?
I'll comment on Bush but I don't think Obama has had enough time and Republicans working against him so he can't do what he really wants, he has to cooperate. On the other hand Bush should be charged and made to answer to his stupidity when in office. He was the worst president we ever had besides his father. I am a Republican, by the way, but I don't vote that way down the line. It depends on the person running. I think that things should be changed for someone running for office. They should not have to come up with millions of dollars because that eliminates people who might be much better but cannot raise that kind of money.

Macejko’s candidacy intriguing
