YSU prez mugs the faculty

Congratulations Bertram on such a well done article. We all know Bertram was not a fan of Dr. Anderson when she was hired, but he clearly understands that Dr. Anderson has led YSU for one year with a steady hand and is big enought to acknowledge that. Dr. Anderson is doing what so many said couldn't be done by an insider. It's just what YSU needs...

Should Youngstown State University faculty go on strike if they don’t get pay raises?

Rumor is that faculty only accepted the report by a few votes. Those who voted to reject probably rejected for different reasons than board I'm guessing. Faculty should not strike, they should just join the real world. No one likes taht we everyone has to pay for healthcare etc and most people don't have pensions anymore and just 401ks. Its too bad this is the way the world is now, but that's the way it is. A few years from now the YSU faculty may be looking back at this time as the good old days...costs for healthcare etc will only go up. Make a deal and get students to school on time. Rumor is that the staff who makes about half of what the faculty make are already willing to make deeper concessions. students have sacrificied, staff has sacrificied, university has made cuts...faculty do your part.

At YSU, it’s all about parking

The Board of Trustees does not set the salary for the other administrators...only the president. Those who report to the president have their pay set by their contracts and approved by the president. Sweet gave all of his cronies raises year after year. It will take Anderson years to fix that too.

YSU president’s mettle tested

AGain, people have the facts wrong. PResident Anderson gave back $100,000 announced last year...all of the pay raises for the life of her contract plus some. Adminsitrators decided a year or so ago under the to give back raises to a schoalrshop pool.

At YSU, it’s all about parking

Everyone knows its not about parking. The point Bertram makes is that the faculty aren't willing to give up anything. Union leaders are filling the public with misinformation while the adminsitration continues to point out that they are in the middle of negotiations and commenting about the process or details to the public is inappropriate. Faculty are trying to brainwash everyone including students that any give ups by them will hurt the students. Bertram is right, students have been shouldering the burden of faculty perks for years. The reason why they are upset is that they have to give something back. Parking may not be the critical issue but is is part of the whole situation. No one seems to be looking elsewhere for a job...oh yea...that tenure thing...lifetime job security...makes you able to complain about your employer in public and then go back to work and collect a paycheck!

Youngstown State University cannot afford faculty strike

The same faculty who screamed and cheered whn Anderson was announced as president is now choosing to make her out to be the enemy...for one reason...they aren't getting what they want.

Aid, scholarship delays fluster YSU students

Students have been paying for faculty raises with their 3.5% tuition increase. STudents for FAculty are crazy in the sense that they are beingh brainwashed by some faculty who suggest that they have poor working conditions. This is all about money. If they were getting raises they wouldnt be complaining about working conditions. Students should not support a potential strike nor buy into ideas that their learning environment will suffer. It will only suffer because some professors use their classroom to complain to students.

Youngstown State University cannot afford faculty strike

Some people seem to forget that there is an operating budget and a capital budget and the two are separate. Money for buildings comes from capital budget from state, bond indebtedness and private donations. Salaries etc. come from the operating budget. So money used for building projects can only be used for just that. If not used for buildings it can't be used for operations and vice versa. So the operating budget was cut $3million this past year and $7million in the new year. Do the math. Captial budget projects (i.e. buildings) are already accounted for. If that money is not used for that it just goes back to the state. In fact, money for Kilcawley Center renovations is being reallocated for basic maintence for other buildings.

Youngstown State University cannot afford faculty strike

Dr. Anderson DID give her raise back. Her contract called for a $25,000 increase in the second year and the third year. She announced last year that she was donating $100,000 to a scholarship in memory of her parents. So she gave back both her raises before she got them and an additional $50,000. Her contract called for the lease of a new american vehicle. She opted to have the university buy her 3 year old car instead of taking a new car. Administrators gave back raises to a scholarship fund over a year ago and exempt employees have been paying 10% of their health care premiums for years. Some of you need to check your facts.

Faculty union, YSU trustees can’t agree on dollars

Many of the comments don't obviously follow YSU news. YSU Trustees are not public employees. They are volunteers and receive no pay. Anderson's contract was carved in stone when she was hired, with $25,000 increases in the second year and third year of her contract. Immediately she announced a gift of $100,000 to a scholarship in honor of her parents. So, she gave back both raises and then another $50,000. Non-union administrators have been paying 10% of health care premiums for years, and voluntarily gave back raises two years ago to fund scholarships. Students have made sacrifices through tuition. Administration has cut budget due to state and federal cutbacks. Faculty and staff must do the same.
