It is a silly battle, but let's be clear, whatever jobs and tax money that comes from this will be minuscule in comparison to what's needed in order to truly improve the Mahoning Valley.
What??? Mr. Rosace, do you really think those 400 jobs will go to people who live in or near Girard? This is much deeper than 400 jobs and 80 acres of land. Why would Girard or even Youngstown allow a company like V&M to dictate any terms? That should not happen. If V&M doesn't like the situation as it is, then it can go somewhere else.
The real solution will come from the people in this valley working together to improve the valley. Allowing another polluting steel company to do business here will either keep things the same or make things worse.
What is 400 jobs really going to do? And these jobs appear to be higher-skilled jobs that most people would not be able to fill. All of this fuss seems misplaced, to me, that is.
Sure, it's nice to see the land being cleaned up, but it's going to be cleaned up only to be messed up again by V&M.
There must be a way to bring financial security to people in the Mahoning Valley, whether that's through living-wage paying jobs with good benefits or through other large-scale cooperative efforts. I don't think the V&M deal will make a difference for most people. And from what I can see, I'm not sure the leaders of Girard and Youngstown are interested in making this area a wonderful place to live.
Somebody will get paid, but it's likely not going to be the majority of people in the Mahoning Valley.
Complaining or debating here will do nothing, so instead, go out, talk with your neighbors, and start thinking of ways to improve this situation.
What a silly battle
