I’m dreaming of something new

Change the station, buy a CD, or get an Ipod. Really...........At least you didn't complain about Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer.

Teams write new chapter in Valley’s football tradition

Less we forget, Girard and Campbell won State Basketball titles on the same day for the boys in 1993. We also had three teams lose in the finals in football in 1989, Campbell and McDonald on Friday and Warren JFK on Saturday, all by I believe one score. Anyway, congrats to the Champions, you have done the area proud.

Let’s lose offensive mascots

I think there is way too much made of the use of nicknames for sporting teams. I do agree that the team "Redskins" is wrong but as for Chief Wahoo, a friendly cartoon face that is loved by children and adults I do not agree. You do not see Irish people complaining about the "Fighting Irish" of Notre Dame and their mascot, and the Seminole Indians approve the costume of the mascot at Florida State. The Chippewas have no problem with Central Michigan.
The use of a native American group in many cases does honor that particular group. Many of the mascots are based on actual members dress and styles, just as the Mountaineer in West Virginia with his rifle is a part of their sports tradition and is considered one of the highest honors to be chosen to be "The Mountaineer."
Enjoy these mascots for what they are, symbols of respect in most all cases. Change the ones that are not, I agree, but not all.

Legendary YSU coach Dom Rosselli dies

For at least three generations of fans in this valley Coach Rosselli was the face of Youngstown College (State University) basketball and baseball. Look at some of the great teams and players he developed, all the time showing what was good about the valley. I remember going to games at the South Fieldhouse and later at Fitch high school to see the powerhouse Division II teams of the 1960's play great games against rivals like Gannon, Ashland, and Akron. I also remember the packed house when YSU finally opened their own building and played Ohio University and then had the great teams led by Jeff Covington in the 1970's. I also had the experience of umpiring a few games in baseball that he was the head coach. The biggest thing I remember was how he worried about getting back the baseballs after the game, my guess being he needed them for batting practice since their budget was not very large. I am very proud that YSU was able to honor him over the last few years while he was still here to see just what he meant to the school and the valley. Too many times we never honor our best until they are gone, at least this time we did it in time. Goodbye coach, thanks for everything.
