What the heck are you talking about??? Downtown is practically empty, oh you must be referring to the 3 square blocks that is Armory Square, while the rest of the city is burned out husk of a town.
There are no new businesses coming in. Syracuse China closed it's doors laying off all it's employees, Magna Int'l isn't expected to last more than 6 months as it's laid off most of it's employees and is now running on a skeleton crew. National Grid is about to lay off 200 employees and jack up it's rates.
Most of the office buildings are half empty while panhandlers and the professional unemployed roam the streets looking for a handout. The once thriving "Little Italy" is now a sea of boarded up windows and "For Lease" signs. The little commercial corridor of James Street is doing no better.
This city put all it's hopes and dreams into a mall expansion that is a year past it's completion date and is literally a hundred million over budget and CitiBank refuses to lend anymore money while the facility sits empty with NO new renters signed up. While it's counterpart of Shoppingtown Mall is a joke with the entire Sears wing empty and the stores that are there rarely contain a few straggling shoppers.
You also forgot to mention how this year Syracuse has shattered it's previous record for homicides in one year (We're over 20 for those who care), and our lovely problems with gang violence, the constant violent crimes, muggings, and drug trafficking.
The students of SU only come down from the hill to do their drinking and partying and act more like spoiled 5-year olds than 20 something college students.
Are we talking about the same city, cuz it sounds like you're talking about somewhere else than the "thriving" city of Syracuse.
Syracuse’s revival a template for Y’town
Revival, REVIVAL!?!
