I suppose an unmonitored message board runs these risks, but..... As a life long resident who has followed local news I have no idea who "the biggest disgrace of them all Colucci" is. At the top of the chain was Jim Trafficant, then the judges would come, if not a commissioner and then other county-wide elected office holders or a big city mayor followed maybe by a prosecutor and lesser lights like a councilman. Colucci? Enlighten me!
Ahhh The Rayen School in the 1960s with Ripple and Thunderbird, were times so different then? Three future City mayors as classmates? The area should be so lucky as to be able to keep those 41 WINNERS around. The lessons learned could be invaluable for them and us!
And the current property owner does not have a responsiblity to keep the property maintained to city codes? It did earn rent for a number of years, has other productive assets, and should pay for upkeep just like any other responsible property owner. Part of the ownership cabal left the City of Warren with derelict property and millions of dollars in clean up work after stripping it for scrap. And what about its other properties in the City? Is it fair to the folks around GF who maintain their property to have to see the devastation left behind by these investors?
The lack of comments here probably signal the major problem with Liberty Schools, the need for proper oversight. Apparently too few capable and responsible community members are monitoring the day to day activities of the Board of Education and school administration. In my view the township is near a tipping point. Things on the south end of the township, from 304 to Gypsy, mirror Youngstown's north side. Maybe to keep those benefit levels Liberty teachers should accept students being in class for a full 12 month school year. So that way Liberty can market itself as the only full-year school system in the region. And in the process perhaps the township can attract more demand for our real estate, thereby inflate rather than depress property values, and thus upgrade our populace to one that is more involved in community affairs as well as getting the best education possible for their kids. And further, a full-year of education might make our children smarter, healthier and better citizens too!
I hate to blame the victim but, dude: what are you doin' walkin' the street with $2100 in your pocket, just after you've been to an ATM? Isn't that asking for trouble? Get a checking account, or a credit card or a debit account!
No doubt the workers need to be disciplined, but the County also needs to follow the rules that are in place so that we the taxpayers do not have to provide these deadbeat employees any more money. And, if the current rules do not allow immediate firing without warning and progressive dicipline, the County must negotiate a provision in its next bargaining agreement. And, further, if this doesn't happen soon, the elected officials need to be retired by the electorate.
The feasibility study to build, equip and stock a grocery at that location needs to be made public. If warranted by the data, private entreprenuers should be encouraged to invest. Utilizing government funds, or subsidizing contruction or operations of a grocery at that site, is just plain wrong. No doubt residents of that area need access to lower grocery prices. There are other solutions to that problem IMHO that would be less costly and have a better chance of succeeding.
