Stan. Let me get this clear. You are saying that all catholic clergy who abuse are homosexuals, right? But I thought homosexuala were men attracted to their same sex, right? But pedophile catholic priests abuse just as many female children as male children, so now what do we call them? Abusive husbands/boyfriends? Since they are now men attracted to the opposite sex? Stan, you need to sort your argument out and make a coherrent case. Right now you sound bigoted and confused.
dck516: "If an accuser has committed suicide over this abuse than they had an underlying problem in the first place." You are pathetic! Not only is your logic and reasoning faulty but your sense of right and wrong is totally upside down. NO child or vulnerable adult asks to be abused. Children do not start out with "an underlying problem". Predatory clergy have problems and they victimize the weak, innocent, and vulnerable. As for polygraph tests, YES please ask every accused priest, their Bishop, and the full chain of command right up to the Vatican to submit to such a test AND ask every victim/alleged victim to do the same. I know of two instances where the victim voluntarily submitted to a polygraph test and the priest perpetrator refused. One is a recently removed priest in the Steubenville diocese. So dck516, please push forward and get everyone, priests and accusers to submit to a polygraph test.
dck516: This "SNAP group," as you reference them, is a 20 year old organization of persons with two missions: 1) healing the victims of clergy sexual abuse, and 2) protecting the children and vulnerable adults of the religious from victimization by clergy through education, exposure, and accountability. Over 95% of the persons associated with SNAP were baptized Catholic. Over 90% were direct victims of clergy sexual abuse. One to two percent are the parents, spouses, or friends of a victim who has committed suicide because they could no longer stand the pain, shame, isolation, and re-abuse by the Church's denial of their claim. WHY ARE ANY OF THEM HAVING TO ASK ANY BISHOP OR THE FAITHFUL MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH for healing and protection of the children of the Church!? "Self-righteousness"! You and the faithful followers of the Church, the priests, and the Church leaders should be so "self-righteousness."
Mr. Goodwin is to be complimented for the balanced and detailed reporting in this article. If you view and read the WKBN or WYTV coverage of this event you come away with a very limited and shallow understanding of the facts and human emotions related to this abuse and all the cases of clergy abuse. The Church's reaction and the faithfuls' response is obviously insufficient and cavalier if a child becomes so desperate and overcome with isolation, frustration, disbelief, and despair that they TAKE THEIR OWN LIFE. This is not a matter of Bishop Murry responding with letters and memos to the past students of Crum and parishes where Crum was placed. This a matter of recognizing the anti-religious and misguided mission and operation of the Catholic Church. It is NOT moral, spiritual, or consistent with the religious words or foundations of the Church to place the welfare of the Church or its ministers ahead of the welfare of and protection from sexual abuse of the children and vulnerable adults among the faithful. The Bishop has access to the secret files that document the lives of every member of the clergy. It is irresponsible and possibly illegal to hold back this information from both the faithful and those charged by statute to investigate and uphold the laws of the State of Ohio. As Judy Block Jones has stated, the Bishop can and should do more.
The Vindy is asking some very valid and urgent questions about whether Fr Crum's colleagues knew about his despicable behavior and did anyone in authority confront him?
I would also ask some more questions.
How was Fr Crum able to get away with abusing not just one child but several, yet the Youngstown Diocese knew nothing about his behavior until a couple of weeks ago when Bishop Murry removed him from his parish?
Crum is reported to have been placed in a private institution somewhere, but have the Youngstown law authorities been notified as to where he is located? As more reports seem to be surfacing, there may be one that is actionable, and accused priests are known to skip the country.
Your article focuses on the importance of asking questions. All parents, who's kids went to Mooney high school, or who were altar boys in other parishes, or who were associated with Fr Crum in anyway, should ask questions. The latest reported victims came forward when they found out that they were not the only ones. This opening up is both healing for the victims and a protection against future victimization by Crum or any other priest.
Children expect adult responsibility and deserve our care. Victims of Crum are worried there are many more who have been harmed by this priest.
I urge anyone who has ever been harmed or has knowledge of harm, come out of the shadows of self-blame or fear. The only way to protect others and help victims heal is to go public. It is your responsibility to contact law enforcement if you have any information about illegal behavior by Fr Crum.

Bishop Murry has earned community’s appreciation
