Directly from the Ohio Dept. of Education, National studies state, "school buses are the safest method for transportation of young people_nearly 30X safer than passenger cars." The decisions by the Austintown Board of Ed. were based simply on money. The lack of concern for the grade school kids as young as 5yrs. is appalling to say the very least. The district is responsible to provide bus service to non-public students at the level that it is providing to it's own students. Comments like, "let them walk, it will slim these kids down and give them character" are not necessary and do not add to a hopefully intelligent conversation in which some hard decisions need to be made. Yes, it was a personal choice to send my own kids to private school and yes I do pay taxes. I expect fair and thoughtful decisions by the board and ask them to reflect on the time when their own children went to school. Honestly, would you put your young child on a bus service that transfers downtown and then drops them off 1 mile from their school.
People, read Sundays paper for the details but this is not about the teachers. The LBOE dropped the ball on this one. The current board has one person who was a board member at the time of this fiasco. Elected officials are supposed to represent the people from the community they work for. They are expected to make thoughtful, educated and informed decisions. The notion that by accepting the promises they were told; they would have double-funding is ludicrous. Who would believe that? There are many unanswered questions such as why and how. Where were the checks and balances and for the love of God where is obermiyer and lucas .Just remember next time you votewho you don't want in. Most of the current Board members and the superintendant were not a board member at the time of the neglegent decision by the board to go ahead with this joke. If, as an adult, you can't see that somes things are too good to be true that is pathetic. Even my 4 yr old grand-daughter knows when something is not real. In regards to one of her dolls she reassured me"Grandma, my doll is not real she is just pretend....she has button eyes after all". Hopefully our current board knows how to spot button eyes.
When we let our anger and frustration direct our thoughts, nothing is accomplished. Name calling and blaming are not productive either. We are all part of the problem and we need to all be part of the solution. Think about it, we are fighting with the same people who we are trying to help. Just a little quote: "You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.YOU CANNOT HELP PEOPLE PERMANENTLY BY DOING FOR THEM, WHAT THEY COULD AND SHOULD DO FOR THEMSELVES." --Abraham Lincoln
Really, Mr. Rugola??!! Your statement," The forces that are arrayed against us today, their voices of intolerance that we hear on the airwaves and their moneyed allies on wall street, have one motivation and one plan in mind only. And that is to destroy and wreck the American middle class." You sound like you're from another planet. So once the middle class is destroyed does that mean that they are dead or just that now the evil forces will have to support them. How stupid is that. The only ones that really need to be "protected" are people who don't deserve the job they have. If you are doing your job with integrity, mental and physical strength, and are proud of what you have done, you don't need the union. I believe our Police, Firefighters, Nurses, Teachers and so on are people who have compassion, character and work hard. There are always some in every occupation that spoil it for the rest because they are loud and obnoxious. My question is WHY in the world do we want to protect them?
It is about time. Nice that our prosecutors and Bertram had to drag these people through the mud. Their time is coming. Talk about crooks, how about Ludt who seems to be first at every accident in town. Who is who's pocket. His buddy Traficanti will be next to hit the road
What kind of craziness was that letter. I am surprised that the vindicator even published that. I guess they did because the Vindicator feels that every person deserves to voice their opinion and rightly so. Obviously the writer of the letter may be ignorant of American history. We are a nation built by immigrants who came to this country for a better life. By the way, if his family did not come to this country as immigrants some time ago then he may not have had the opportunity to voice his opinion because of his freedom of speech.
There are many important issues to be addressed during this campaign and both candidates have very different views and solutions to them. For an elected official to boldly state that race is the deciding factor for those of the opposing party or those that have not decided is reckless and insulting. I don't know one person that wants to be labeled a racist. That is a pretty charged accusation directed at people they don't even know. The word racist carries alot of power and yet it is thrown around casually. The only thing that results from such ignorant comments is that Youngstown Ohio makes national news again showing the nation that our elected officials think we are racist. Give your constituents a little credit and remember that we have a functioning brain, after all you are going to need our vote when you need re-elected.
