It's not the employees that are mismanaging the Department and that haven't hired enough Deputies, it's obviously the Administration. Instead of automatically hating the Unions how about you target the Administrators with their heads in a hole in the ground.
This guy is truly mentally ill and needs to be somewhere he can't hurt someone or himself, and keep him from getting arrested. But it's no one's priority to keep the mentally ill safe and supply them with the medication they need, so they keep getting arrested and don't have the culpability to go to court. It's a broken system that will never change.
"Residents didn’t approve the renewal of the 0.5 percent sales tax earlier this month so city and county officials could lock horns in the courts over the housing of prisoners in the county jail."
The budget had already been cut by almost a third by the Commissioners earlier this year before the tax passed. The problem is that the first cuts are seemed to be made in the Safety Services first, and they were the first to take concessions too. But when the cuts were made everyone thought it was the tax, but the County was just trying to wait out the expiration of the Consent Decree.
If people want their Government to run correctly, then they do need to give them the necessary funds to run it. If the people do not trust the Commissioners that run the County, then sign the petition to recall them.
Your Deputies that have been there for 5 years and started out making less than 12/hr are still making the same wage! I don't know where you think the "overgenerous pay" is going to, but it certainly isn't the largest part of the pie from the general fund.
Then why not support the recall of the commissioners if you don't have any faith in them instead of constantly putting down the tax. I understand not trusting the politicians in power right now because they're handing money out to any department that asks for it, but you're asking your county to go without millions of more dollars. If you think you could run this county better, run for the office.
It's the County Government's responsibility to operate the jail, courts and patrol for unincorporated areas. It is no one else's responsibility. I'm adamantly for providing the Sheriff's Office with what they need and deserve to be paid, but we shouldn't expect Youngstown or any other city to make up for Tablack's funding of everyone else except the county. I wish everyone would go down to the Auditor's office and request to see the wages of people that are paid out of the general fund. It's sickening that secretaries make more than Deputies dealing with violent criminals.

Mahoning CSB approves pay raises for workers
Why is it that any county employee is getting a raise when so many of our deputies are laid off?

Mahoning County should cut elsewhere, not sheriff’s department

Hail the public sector unions?
The public employees bargaining units sit down with the elected government officials and they are supposed to represent the tax payer's interests.
