16 of 70 Youngstown students could fail 1st grade

"Sixteen first-graders at Harding Elementary School risk not advancing to second grade, despite a student-to-teacher ratio of 15-to-1."

Looks like there is some hard evidence to support SB5. I'm all for teachers and really believe that many are underpaid, however there needs to be a system in place where the teachers are held accountable. And should the argument about parents being held accountable come up, I support that too. But if you have teachers saying that it's the parents' fault, the teachers should not be able to bargain for things such as classroom size because it would matter if it was 15 or 30 students.

Go Go case defendant assaulted

A lot of people don't want a lot of things in their towns, bars, strip clubs, factories, etc. But the fact is that the city/township collects tax revenue from these facilities. And remember, for every customer one of these facilities brings in there is a chance that customer will also stop to buy gas, eat food or conduct other business in that city/township. More money spent = more tax revenue! The Go-Go most likely has little effect on property values of commercial and light industrial properties. I don't see many residential properties around the Go-Go.

City man accused of gang membership gets probation

"Judge D’Apolito said he understands that McClarin had been accused of being a gang member, but said there is no proof beyond those allegations."

OK, so he can't be proved a gang member. So what about the felony marijuana trafficking? Probation? Some people around here get harsher sentences for marijuana possession. What a joke!

Youngstown mayor considers DC firm for help in police-chief search

Maybe I should start a firm to assist the public sector in hiring. I can easily set up an email address and subscribe to a company that does background checks. I'll post the job vacancy on a few national job boards, run a few background checks and then forward the city my "recommended" candidates. All for one easy payment of $50,000 per job.

Youngstown mayor considers DC firm for help in police-chief search

Can anyone tell my why we have to hire a firm to hire a police chief? What happened to doing it yourself. Just read the applications and conduct some interviews! What a waste of money!

Parents discuss Youngstown high school reorganization plan

Why is everyone in this town so resistant to change? It might be a good thing, you never know. There is no set-in-stone solution to fixing the school district's problems. The only way to fix things is to try something new and see if t works, if not, try something different. It's like going to the doctor- you describe your symptoms, he makes a recommendation based on his education and his experience and you both go from there. If you get better you never think twice, if you are still sick you go back and he tries something different.

Let's give it a shot, what has the district got to lose? Youngstown is already worst in the state in academics and just got out of fiscal emergency....why do nothing and risk staying on the bottom?

‘Mistaken identity’

Stan, we know the $250,000 or higher income is most likely real but not from a job. It's a shame these people have more money than they know what to do with while the rest of us struggle.

Pencil attacks, alcohol use probed at schools in city

Great, let's blame politics for these altercations at the schools, not the parents. I forgot that Obama and the liberals have raised these kids, not their families....all the buses head straight back to DC at the end of the day so the kids can go to the White House. What a joke! Some people have no sense of responsibility in society, they just blame things on everyone else.

It doesn't matter what type of government is running a country, bad parenting is still bad parenting! The other problem is the lawsuits, schools are afraid to punish kids due to the fear of a lawsuit. I say lets bring back some of the old ways of punishment i.e. paddling.
