It's fun to watch people get so worked up over another "ranking" story. Just two months ago Forbes listed (and the Vindy reported) Youngstown was one of the most livable cities. Really? And now this story? LOL!
What it comes down to for me is this: I can live and work here just fine. My kids get a decent public school education. We can go out in downtown Youngstown. Mill Creek Park is incredible. We have a nice house (in Youngstown).
I don't vote Dem or Rep... I vote for he best candidate. Just wish we had more choices.
Go ahead, crucify me for being an optimist. Shoot me down for being happy to live here. If you do, you miss the point.
Right on "print" - the YSU faculty will never win this public battle in the Vindy. No matter how this unscientific poll comes out, the "Spin"dy will find a way to frame it to make the union and all other unions look bad. The Vindy owners want to see SB5 stick in November.
Leave it to the Vindy to post a completely inaccurate, misleading poll question. There are no raises at the end of the day, and the 1 and 2 percent in the last two years of the contract are way, way below typical cost of living adjustments. When you count in the money the faculty are being asked to give up in terms of health care (average will pay about $3000 a year), parking ($500 a year), losses in summer pay (on average about $250 per extra class taught), and more... many faculty will be making less at the end of the 3 year contract than they made last year.
So raises? What raises?
All this while they raise tuition 3.5%? What exactly are the students paying for? I thought they were paying for faculty to teach... can't raise tuition AND run your faculty into the ground. So much for building an elite Urban Research University.
This is why news matters, this is why the Vindy matters, this is why journalists (in this case, a student journalist from YSU) are important - because when they cover issues like this, when they expose problems like this - change can take place. Thank you to Mr. Pompili for shedding light on this place, and its history of mismanagement. I hope this pastor and the OH Valley Teen Challenge can really turn it around. I hope Mr. Pompili is around in a year or so to follow-up (just assuming its going to take that much time to get this place fixed up and functional).
Oh, and are you serious about the link? Of course there's no stream to listen to - that's why their asking for 50k! They have NO EQUIPMENT! For someone who spends a lot of time posting (see censoredship's 900 comments) you should spend a little less time commenting and more time reading and "critically" thinking.
To censoredship: If you looked at the project you would have noted that this is NOT a rinky-dink operation like you suggest. These kids will be using state-of-the-art equipment - only way to get the REAL experience they need to learn radio skills. It's a good thing your not teaching these kids. And the best part about this - none of it is being funded by YSU. Lighten up.
Ahh darryl1914, it’s so easy for you to call a fighter who gets the crap beat out of him for a living a coward. My definition of "coward" is someone who posts to a message board - anonymously- calling someone a "coward." The coward is the one who hides behind an anonymous post. Nice job.
Pride parade draws bigger crowds downtown this year
Wait. Bigger crowds for the Pride parade? Didn't Magic Mike start this weekend? ;)
In all seriousness, many of these amazing people are my friends. Only wish I could have been there to see it. I'm sure it was fabulous.

Should Youngstown State University faculty go on strike if they don’t get pay raises?

‘Big Uglies’ keeping quarterback clean
At a combined 1170 pounds, that's almost enough weight to bring down a YSU elevator.
