If you shoot and kill someone, you will be taken into custody for questioning. Regardless of it's inside your home or not. It's called an investigation. Under your rules, you could simply murder someone and then not let the police into your home? They will get the warrant anyway and it is a crime scene....for the burglary at least. At the conclusion of the investigation, a prosecuting attorney will likely be the one to decide if you are going home or being charged. That is how the law works and the police acted appropriately.
