Tyler Clark, thank you for this post demonstrating the relativity of local news reports. I would personally love to see such an exercise become a regular feature so people could continue to develop and hone the ability for close, mindful reading (& viewing) so we can filter out the subjectivity that slants the stories we get from our news sources. Papers know that many readers approach these stories reactively, but as responsible citizens it is important to be aware of the complex of nuanced biases behind so much reporting.
In regards to this particular story, I would agree that Mr. Novotny's youth and drive are qualites that the people of Youngstown need to value and support rather than construe as incompetence. It is easy to become complacent in our low expectations in static, trying times, but the young people who choose to study and remain in Youngstown after graduation are the ones who will determine where we go from here.
Furthermore, Mr. Novotny is truly a unique individual with a grounded and practical sense of insight into the city. His remarkable intelligence and down-to-earth understanding of the community would be invaluable assets to anyone who chooses to employ his talents. Anyone who has ever worked with him before would undoubtedly vouch for that. Let's hire him before somebody else does.
