Poland BOE to decide on levy

And I will vote yes. Someone needs to stand up for our community and our children.

Golden Dawn still glitters on the North Side

I have been eating at the Dawn since I was a child. Who could forget the box of bubblegum? That was my fondest memory as a child. I love sharing it with my kids. Some traditions in Youngstown are meant to live on. To those who lack the appreciation, kindly don't trample on our memories and spare us all your negativity. To the Naples... Thank you! My dad and I will visit soon with my kids! The tradition will continue.

Canfield parent files lawsuit against school board

If only the Canfield taxpayers were more enraged over the fact that their precious tax dollars were being wasted by frivolous lawsuits such as those filed by the Hyde family. We cannot blame the schools for the shortcomings of our children. Now other children will suffer because the Hyde family did not get their way. How pathetic.

Athletics4Life, well said. Parents, we need a little shot of reality. Too bad many of you will not get it until your children enter the real world.

Energy manager helps Canfield schools save money

Shame on all of you for taking something good and positive and attacking it. I can no longer read these blogs because the negativity of the same 5 or 6 people continues to poison the virtual airways of this website. It's worse than "drinking the Kool - Aid." People of the Mahoning Valley are drinking the toxic draino that you bloggers are offering. I hope at some point, they decide they've had enough. I am ashamed to be a Vindy subscriber if all of you are, too. I am even more sorry for my children because they will have to live in a society that is affected by the outcome of your poisonous rants. The schools are not the problem… you are.

Poland schools face loss of up to $1.3M in state aid

Wage reduction... are you serious? Teachers provide a valuable service, after attaining high levels of continuing education, for a very minimal price. The reason that a bulk % of a school budget goes to teachers is because education is people driven. You need educators to TEACH to the children... they cannot do it themselves or even simply learn from a text. The teacher is the catalyst that allows the learning process to exist. I know plenty of teachers that live very simple lifestyles because their jobs DO NOT afford them any "extras." They are not overpaid; they are fairly paid, and should remain so. Teachers that are making higher salaries have been working for 35 years (and are an exception, not the rule)! Most teachers, in the middle, earn a very reasonable wage. We are lucky, in Poland, to have an AMAZING public school system. Other states (and communities) are not so lucky. We need to support them, even thought the state will not.

Stop bashing teachers. It is because of one that you can write this blog now. The teachers are not the problem, the politics are.

Side note : If you think it is expensive to fund a local public school system through property taxes now, wait until the governor continues to cut funding to local districts. Eventually the governor’s the plan for a privatized educational system will have you begging for the school levies of the past. A school voucher for private education will not cut it, especially if your child is not at the top of the cognitive heap. You will all be begging for your local school districts again! Education for profit is NOT the answer. The only one who will win is the “big wig” executive collecting the profits on the backs of our children’s education. That is our future according to Kasich.

Cuts threaten projects at Youngstown Air Reserve Station

Thank you, fattkidd, you've said it all. If only someone would start listening to you and consider the importance of the ever shrinking middle class. Instead, we attack each other while fat cats watch and laugh at our stupidity.

"Start making massive cuts to public services and/or defense and/or entitlements and this country will spiral into a depression the likes of which we could only dream of."

And so it begins...

Without levy passage, look for additional cuts in Canfield schools, leaders say

It is not a spending problem. Canfield and Poland both spend the least amount of money per student than any other local school district. Attend a town hall meeting, get the facts. When other districts are getting state money these two districts have to rely on LOCAL money to support their students. If you have a gripe, it should be at the state level. I am tired of the criticims of these two amazing districts. They cannot spend any less. Cut funding for education now... cut property values later. Then, also cut away the success of our children and the future of this country.

Poland to have town-hall meetings to explain levy

Our future as a nation depends on the quality of education available for our children. The Poland schools have a tradition of excellence in education that should be supported, not berated. The teachers work hard for every penny they earn. Cuts to education will lead to cuts in our society. I am not willing to risk the future of my children, the future of our country, and my property value. The daily attacks on education on these blogs are horrible. Support your schools and your children! As parents we need to unite to support what is necessary for our children and our community. I, for one, support the levy. You should be attacking the state, an unfair funding system, and unfunded mandates… not the people that sacrifice daily for your children. Keep up the good work, Poland schools!

State-of-art high school opens as first link of $56M campus

It seems to me that the energy efficiency of this building will save the district maintenance costs. It continues to be depressing and pathetic that individuals fail to value a quality education. A home computer will NEVER compete with an amazing teacher in a great school. This facility is something to celebrate. Enjoy, class of 2014 - celebrate and learn.
Oh, and kudos to the architects for the use of natural light in classrooms!

Sheriff: SC mom killed kids, dumped car in river

I am so disgusted that I can barely breathe. Preventing these births in the first place (abstinence or birth control) would have saved these precious little angels the trauma of both their life and their death. When did children become disposable? (Although turning them over to the state would have been a far better option.) Unfortunately it appears that a cycle of bad parenting continues without any regard for human life. Now I need to sit and cry...
