Youngstown leads nation with poverty rate of 49.7%

Sad but true. I am not surprised. What's worse is that the $14 per hour is not the norm for the jobs in this area. $14 per hour is considered good, or the highest you are lucky to get. The average seems to be $7.55 per hour. To make it worse, many of the jobs in this area are not offered at full time. So part-time, no benefits no wonder the poverty rate is as high as it is. There doesn't seem to be any plan to correct this. It has become the new normal.

St. E’s begins renovation project

Smart business people in charge here. They deserve to be commended for such an outstanding job in investing in their infrastructure and employees. Good job!

Boardman’s pet peeve

There are worse things to be concerned about rather than the employee waving a sign wearing a dog costume! Leave them alone. They stay on the sidewalk and do not bother anyone. I have never seen them out in the street. I enjoy seeing them. I think it is cute and it is also what caught my eye and drew me in to buy my puppy a few months ago.

Health care hike, summer pay cap in YSU deal

Lucky you, an income based health care contribution is awesome. My employer charges all employees 20% regardless of income. So those making 24,000 a year are paying the same as the CEO who makes 6 figures. How fair is that? Also, you are at least getting a raise eventually. My employer has had us on a pay freeze for the past 4 years. Our health insurance plan also requires a "wellness screening" to help lower our premiums. The screening includes fasting blood work to check cholesterol, glucose, nicotine and several more. A height, weight and waist measurement and 2 BMI tests and blood pressure check. They probably even check our DNA, although they deny that they are checking the DNA. If you pass all the screening tests, you can save money on your premiums. The sad thing for us is that we work at a hospital. There are no employee discounts for us on our healthcare. By the way, if you happen to be a part-time employee you can not buy the health insurance. You are basically working at a hospital and are among the uninsured. They are currently cutting employees and making them part-time. We are following the lead of the Cleveland Clinic which has the highest number of uninsured workers.

Bankruptcy, sale costs for Forum Health near $30M

What a con! Everyone has been chumped! They have been punishing the employees all along throwing people out like trash. They have not invested as much as they claim. Painting some walls and renting equipment at Northside is NOTHING! They have failed to bring in the doctors as promised, they have failed to find a location in "Southern Mahoning County" to increase the business at Northside. The sprinker system upgrade is old news. The sprinkler upgrade was started prior to the bankruptcy and just needs to be finished. It is nothing new. It has been one big lie. The bankers, consultants, attorneys and Board are the ones who will make out like bandits. The employees (the few who are left) and the community are the ones who lose. So much sacrifice given by the employees, wage freezes, higher insurance premiums, give backs on holiday pay and vacation time, give backs on sick time and for what, a pink slip? Thanks CHS and all the other greedy folks involved in this debacle. EPIC FAIL!!

Poland weighs options with no busing

I think it is a shame to cut this service. Not everyone can run out to buy a car for their child. My child attends Boardman High school and he has been saying all year that they never have soap or paper towels in the bathrooms. They will probably require students to bring their own toilet paper, paper towels and soap next year. I attended a concert at the Performing Arts center in June and found out for myself that they really don't have soap or paper towels in the bathrooms. I was appalled. More people may consider cyberschooling for their children. At least you would get a basic education and no transportation issues at all. It could become the new trend for education in the future.

YSU eyes 3.5% hike in tuition

It would be a sin if they decide to raise tuition again in these tough economic times. If they want enrollment to keep increasing, they should not take advantage of the students by gouging them. The employees should be willing to give back. They are well-paid and have above average benefits. They should be willing to sacrifice to help the community.

Say, judge, who's the businessman?

What is the difference between a "loan" and a bribe? I didn't think there was a difference. If a judge is handling cases by this mysterious business man and accepts this "loan" it appears to be a bribe. Why is the businessman allowed to remain anonymous? Where is the good reporting by our Vindicator and Tribune staff? You guys are not doing your job! Or are you too afraid to reveal this mystery man?

Boardman’s General Extrusions auctions equipment to pay loans

Where are the politicians? This is so unfair to these workers. The big bankers get to take advantage of the average guy once again. Why wasn't anything done to prevent this from happening? Who is responsible for this?

Workers picket, General Extrusions struggles

Another example of the worker getting screwed and the big banks running the show. Someone needs to find out if PNC was one of the banks the taxpayers bailed out. I feel bad for the workers. It doesn't look good for anyone to be recalled. Where are the local politicians? They should be getting involved. We do not need any more workers to lose their jobs, no do we need another empty building.
