Thank you for this article. As a 1975 graduate of Springfield Local High School, I am not surprised at such academic excellence. I am also thrilled to have a story on Mr. Dan Simcox who was my Senior Government teacher during his first year at Springfield Local. Mr. Simcox felt bad for not answering a question 35 years ago. He may not have known what to say on that day but he answered so many of my questions that year – including where I should go to college. Mr. Simcox shared his passion for learning and government every day of my senior year. He related history to each event in politics of the day and showed how all the events of history are intertwined. As a field trip at the end of our senior year, Mr. Simcox took our class to the courthouse in Youngstown to register to vote and then to the jail. His message was pretty clear that day – You can participate in government or government will participate in your life. He also told us to think of him each time we voted which I still do. As a teacher of 28 years, I am fortunate to have had such a good role model in high school.
