Cash offered to home buyers

ytownismytown: Don't assume that because someone expresses opposition, they don't know what they're talking about. Many of us ARE familiar with this organization, and the cooperating organizations. We are familiar with the neighborhoods, and we have seen what happens when people who cannot afford these homes move in. There is a LOT more to owning a home besides making a down payment, and the monthly mortgage payment. There is maintenance, which on these older houses is SUBSTANTIAL; there are utilities; there are taxes; there is constant replacement of roofs, windows, underground connections to gas and water, etc. The vast majority of people who take advantage of these sorts of programs have little understanding of what they're getting into. And it takes very little time before they're in over their heads. It does not make sense to financially subsidize down payments. It's bad public policy and you'd think that the recent troubles in the mortgage industry, and the huge numbers of foreclosures, brought on by people who bought houses they couldn't afford, would be enough of a warning. But no, not in Youngstown.

Cash offered to home buyers

Great. Just what these neighborhoods need - more residents who can't afford to live there. If you think it's bad now, just wait until these poor people move in and can't afford the upkeep. If you own a property there now, try to sell it and get out!

Despite snow damage at DeYor, ‘Riverdance’ show will go on

Thank God the fire escape came down because of snow, and not because people were using it to exit the building! But I am very concerned that there's unseen structural damage to the outer walls. And the show coming in today has a LOT of vibrations, from the music and stomping on stage.

Well done! Now, if we can just keep the unions from making unreasonable demands, we'll be in good shape.

Suspect sought in $80K Covelli robbery

I posted on another article about this robbery last night, but that article seems to have disappeared. So I will repeat my question here: Is there any evidence that there actually was $80,000 on hand to be stolen? Or is everyone going on someone's word about that? If there is an insurance company that will have to pay off on this robbery, you can be sure they will be asking a lot of hard questions about this.

Even if Boston Culinary was preparing for a sell-out crowd, say 8,000 people, (I don't know the actual number, but it is probably in this ballpark), $80,000 would be an excessive amount of cash to have on hand. Something doesn't add up, here.

Is anyone thinking possible insurance fraud?

Covelli robber got $80K; still at large

Do we actually believe that $80,000 was on hand to be stolen? Had there just been an event at the center? Is there any proof that this much money was available, or is someone just saying so? You can bet that whatever insurance company may be on the line for this money will be asking very tough questions. It wouldn't be the first time someone made a claim of a robbery, for the insurance money. I'm not saying that this is necessarily happening here; but it is a distinct possibility. Interesting case.

City to award grants for downtown events

Youngstown has been cutting back on police and fire protection, but has money to fund stuff like this????

I have no problem with events; just don't see why the city should be paying for them.

The reason for the season

DJcolon: Actually, the earliest gospel in the New Testament is Matthew, and it is generally believed to have been written long after Jesus' life. There is no evidence that any of the New Testament gospels were written by contemporaries of Jesus. While this does not take away from the beauty, and wisdom of the New Testament, it is difficult to say that any of it is definitely the word of Jesus.

At last count, biblical scholars were in possession of over 5,000 early manuscripts which have been shown to be the source of much of what we now call the New Testament. Scholars have demonstrated that some stories which now appear in the New Testament were never in the original manuscripts; and likewise, much of what was in those early works has been edited out, for various reasons; some political, some religious.

Again, none of this has to detract from the importance of the New Testament. But it does suggest that we all tread carefully when quoting it as an authoritative source.

Happy New Year!
