Atown, think as you wish about me personally, it's no matter. My child has been provided with a wonderful educational experience at Austintown and truly, to me, that's all that DOES matter in my book. I'm sorry you cannot say the same. Everyone takes away something different from their interactions as have you and I. Good luck with quest to reform Austintown Schools.... See you at the BOE meetings!
I wouldn't feel the need to continue to respond if you were actually reading what I wrote. You can't pick one or two words out of an entire post and focus on that and that alone. And if you knew tha meaning of PTA, then why did you assume I was at a rally? I had been accused of burying my head in the sand when it came to the schools.... my mentioning the PTA was to point out that I was involved. Can I be sarcastic, yes, have I been here, no, only irritated that the sum of my blog has not been read. I'm over this whole conversation. The school closed.. get over it. My child's education is managed by me and she will be fine no matter the levy issue, school closings, etc.
They will manage it by cutting staff, cutting programs, and making parents fork over fees for everything from books, supplies and sports. If you think they lack equal options in classes and learning now, just wait until they make the hard decisions needed to work within their current means.
That was a very select group of members that rallied... I was not for or against the closing. I see the merits of both positions, however, I'm not upset over the closing. There's also a big difference between being a member and being involved in a "rally". You have to be a member to paticipate in any PTA sponsored events with your child at the school (room parent, etc). And I stated I didn't need an elementary school in my backyard for a sense of community, no other reason was stated. Please try to follow the arguments being made in my posts.
One last thing, I am not a teacher, before the assumption is made.... I am a nurse. I became a nurse thanks in no small part to my teachers and parents.
The parent is not an educator, only a reinforcer?!! In my home I am most certainly an educator!! By your logic, if a student fails a subject it's the teacher's fault. In my home I am an educator full-time, my child is student full-time and her teachers are educators part-time. My children's success in school cannot happen without all parties doing their share. As for their wages.... please. I go into the doctor's office with my child, spend an hour in the waiting room, two minutes with the physician and I'm charged over 200.00! Professional athletes make an obscene amount of money for nothing more than talent. I could go on forever in the disparity of wages in various careers. Teachers deserve to make a wage commensurate with the importance of what they do daily.
Good grief, nobody would ever mistake me for a person that buries their head in the sand. I have had a wonderful experience with Mrs. White, Mrs. Manning, Mr. Bakes and Princial Lenton. These were the people directly responsible for the education of my daughter. I attend the BOE meetings, I am a member of the PTA and if ever I feel the need to be involved I am. I am a realist, there were too many schools. I don't need to have an elementary school in my backyard to feel a sense of community. It seems to me that your problem is with change. Again, if you feel so strongly that Austintown Schools have "gone completely downhill" do something about it by going elsewhere for your children's education. I certainly wouldn't sit by waiting for what I perceived to be the "change" I was seeking. I'd have my child in the best possible educational environment right now.
They closed Davis to save money, my daughter went there up until this past year... she will now go to Watson, no big deal. There were too many elementary schools to begin with. As for contract negotations.... teachers wages need increased not decreased or kept stagnant. I entrust teachers with the loves of my life for the better part of the day...I want them paid well. If you feel so strongly that your children do not benefit from their education with Austintown take them out and homeschool them or pay tuition elsewhere. I will "continue to blindly throw money" into the schools.... I believe in supporting my schools. No system is perfect and frankly I have had a wonderful experience with Austintown educators and administrators. Our kids must live on different planets! As for my house, I'll rent it to the next wave of problems looking for a better place to school their deliquents and move to Canfield.
Atown Parent Like I said, what happens with the levy happens. My parents didn't raise a fool. I was taught to vote yes for the important levies. I will continue to say yes to the police... I want them to be there if I need them, I will vote for the fire dept... if my home is in flames I want them to come and most importantly, my children deserve a great education in a safe environment.... so I will vote yes for the levy. If the levy fails or passes and open enrollment becomes a reality I'll move to a school district without open enrollment end of story. I think you have forgotten for whom the levy will benefit.... the children. Think about that when you arbitrarily vote it down. And also don't cry and moan over the problems that follow you asked for them.
Peace2U, I've read the article you referenced and I am willing to pay the increase in tax on my home and any other fees Austintown Schools can come up with in order to keep open enrollment out of the schools. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to provide my children with a quality education in a safe environment.
