We know exactly what happened! We can see it in the video. Self defense requires imminent peril. The only peril facing the deputy involved his circulatory system, not this guy on the floor. It doesn't matter what the guy said. And it doesn't matter what the guy might have done if the tables were turned. The standard of behavior for a Sherrif's Deputy is somewhat higher than it is for a felon, don't you think? Although it now appears that this deputy may be a felon.
I met Joe Curry 42 years ago when I was a Freshman and he was a Sophomore. I tried to compete in Original Oratory (his category) and soon realized that I'd have to wait 3 years to be #1 in that category, if ever. So I moved on to something I was even worse at. Oh, well. It always boils down to knowing one's limitations. Joe is still looking for his. This honor is well deserved and almost inadequate. When you know Joe, it's not that he's good at one thing or another. He's just a good human being. One of the best, in fact. Cheers, Joe! You deserve this. Jim Dyer
What's changed over the years is that the things that unions once had to fight for (workplace safety, regulation of child labor, overtime pay, etc.) have been long since incorporated into the law. (OSHA, Child Labor Law, Federal Wage and Hour Act, etc.) Unions won the war but kept looking for battles. Some of the battles they chose contributed directly to the demise of manufacturing jobs in the US. Many communities that collapsed in the 1970's when Youngstown did have re-emerged with new and vital industries. Youngstown, alas, hasn't got a prayer as long as it continues to foster a hostile environment for employers. Why go to Youngstown and put up with this kind of foolishness? Skills?? Don't kid yourself. The people who were displaced during the great decline of the rust belt are in their 60's and 70's now. This area has produced an entire generation of angry, unskilled unemployables. Fix your schools, give up your union legacy and maybe there'll be something for your children.
