I find it interesting that the shale gas interests reveal in the comments that they believe that they have the right to demand that local government be cut entirely out of all things related to the exploitation of shale gas.
It would appear that democracy is subservient to shale gas...at least in some minds. If government itself is to be set aside, then the interests of the people...well, they must be lower than a injection well hole on the shale gas totem pole.
I get a little tired of the "people buying steaks with food stamps" bull. I was at wally world and somebody in front of me paid for their food with one of those green cards. As I'm paying for my stuff (cash, before you start), I hear this woman behind me start going off about that previous person buying steaks with an EBT card.
I'm afraid that I may have sounded a little angry when I pointed out that those were chuck steaks, and those things are so cheap and tough that you could use 'em to tenderize the kind of person who runs their mouth about food stamps.
@commoncitizen: Seen you guys complaining on the web about "Obama phones" before. Me, I've given leather jackets to the goodwill store before (it's called "charity"). Don't know about the jewelry. You saying you've run up to such people with a jeweller's scope and a bottle of nitric acid to verify it's real?
It is almost impossible to believe Dems have outspent Reps on anything. I was driving around Mercer county admiring the sheer size, amount, and quality of the Republican signs...I've never seen anything like it in the three decades I've spent stateside since getting out of the Army.
The expense...all I can think is those Republican types sure will spend a lot of money so they don't have to spend money protecting Americans here at home from the dangers of starvation, disease, and homelessness.
It don't make any sense to me...why spend money fighting al Qaeda (or anybody else) "over there", when you got people - the Republicans - trying to make sure Americans don't have any alternative to dying over here?
Ever watch a glass recently emptied of a cold liquid mysteriously skate across a table as the water from condensation provides a suspension and lubrication layer between the glass and the table?
Sometimes it takes a little tap to get it moving, of course.

The story says: "Lisa Lombardo, Jameson’s director of public relations, said the hospital’s policy is to conduct screenings to provide care to newborns."
Now usually that kind of arrogance - "it is policy" - is reserved for the use of for-profit entities (i.e., they think they can make money doing it, so they do it).
However as Jameson Health System is a non-profit, I can only guess...perhaps a big donor made his or her donation contingent upon drug screening of patients and/or newborns?
I've noted that our wealthy Republicans can often be like that; spewing "individual liberty" and vitriol against "intrusive government" right up until THEIR money is involved, at which point their demand for control and their intrusiveness into the privacy of others makes King George into an icon of democracy by comparison - particularly if somebody utters the word "drugs".
[bq] One high-profile demonstration of the validity of poppy seed drug test claims was conducted by the Discovery Channel television program called "Mythbusters." One participant ate a poppy seed cake and tested positive for opiates a ½-hour later. The other participant ate three poppy seed bagels and tested positive two hours later. Both parties continued to test positive for 16 hours.
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) conducted a study that examined the results of 317,500 urine specimens that were tested for opiates and reviewed by three Medical Review Officer (MRO) groups, as well as 1.1 million specimens from five certified laboratories. The MRO’s reportedly reversed 87% of all the positive urinalysis test results due to false positives attributed to poppy seed ingestion, prescription medication, or other reasons. [eq]

It is easy to find evidence that false positives from poppy seeds are routine. Consider this UPMC article at
