In the article Representative Letson makes this mind boggling statement: "We shouldn't make laws that turn our citizenry into liars." What???? This is indeed a strange bit ot twisted logic. A law is just that, a law. No law, no matter how trivial, turns anybody into a liar. Only PEOPLE can turn THEMSELVES into liars, If a person knows that what they are doing is against a law then the law isn't to blame, the person is. This law needs to be changed or repealed but until that happens it is wrong to blame the law when somebody breaks it. The people who flaunt this law do so knowingly, to blame the law is foolish. Mr. Letson, as a person who participates in making laws, should know better. If he does not, then one has to wonder exactly what the people were thinking when they elected him.
Mr. Wimer from B.J.Allen says in the article "it's difficult to run public service announcements on fireworks safety in a state where it's illegal". Bull! The fireworks retailers sure don't have any problem running hundreds of ads on television SELLING these fireworks in a state where they are illegal. All the TV stations I see running these ads are in Ohio. And before anybody uses the excuse that these ads reach across state lines, they are advertising fireworks that are illegal in PA too. As long as we are putting explosives into the hands of the general public let's at least tell them how to use them safely. Here in Hubbard it sounds like a war zone around the 4th and the police, who can see some of the massive displays from the police station, just ignore it. We are teaching our kids a terrible lesson when we say it is OK to decide to disregard a law. Either enforce the law or change it.
No mention has been made of the DUI Bowers recently received. And here's one even worse. The so-called "foreman" of the Hubbard electric department left a city vehicle running unattended, which is already a violation of Ohio law. Naturally the vehicle was stolen. From the City Hall parking lot! It was recovered in Youngstown a few days later but his large ring of keys to every Hubbard city building was missing. The result was that EVERY lock on EVERY Hubbard city building had to be changed. Who paid for changing all the locks? The good citizens of Hubbard, thats who. And was the employee whose mistake caused all this trouble and expense ever punished or even repremanded or asked to pay for the costs incurred by his mistake? No. This employee is the son of a long-time city councilman. What does that tell you? Nepotism? It isn't anything new in Hubbard.
People keep saying "council" as if it was a single entity. PLEASE note that there are some members of Hubbard city council that do NOT agree with some of the other members. There are certain council members who actually OPPOSE the firing of Mr. Collins as anyone who attended the latest meeting knows. Let's not lump every council member into the general term of "council" since they are all not of the same mind. This is probably true of any city council. And, one commenter above was right, who on Hubbard council is related to city employees who might be let go if Mr. Collins is retained? There are THREE members of council who have direct relatives on the city dole. Mr. Gilliland and Mr. Palestro both have sons on the city payroll and Mrs. Pompeli-Baumiller has a brother in the street department as well as a nephew. Does this tell you anything? Instead of eliminating a department supervisor Hubbard needs to HIRE a superintendant for the electric and water departments. A supervisor would make the employees accountable for their time and pay for themselves in saved overtime. My question is: WHAT do the electric department employees do during the 40 hours each week they get paid for before their overtime kicks in? There are over a dozen employees in the Hubbard electric department so that comes out to nearly 500 man hours each week BEFORE overtime. WHAT DO THEY DO for these 500 hours each week? Besides playing video games that is. When was the last time you saw a Hubbard electric department employee doing more than riding around wasting gas? Or leaving a city vehicle running and unattended so it can be stolen? Yes, that actually happened and the city employee (a son of a council member) who was responsible never was disciplined or made to pay for the expenses incurred. In the real world he would have been FIRED! By the way, if you check you'll find that Hubbard city council members seem to be the lowest paid of any other council in the area. Some of them actually give the city residents more than their moneys worth. Others are only looking out for their relatives.
Going back even farther, remember British Airships that proposed a blimp manufacturing facility here, I think this was suippossed to be at Lansdown. Or, more recently, the Indoor Race Track near the airport. How much money did we waste on that pipe dream? What about the Ronnenburg Brewery proposed in the 70s?? How gullible are we?
If the City of Hubbard got rid of every employee who is related to somebody in city government there would be hardly anybody left. But this would still be a good idea, especially in the bloated and unsupervised electric department where their main job us to think up new ways to collect overtime. Is it any surprise that the person collecting the most overtime in the Hubbard electric department has a FATHER on city council?
According to the story that was just on TV the Hubbard parade is cancelled because the city can't afford to pay the police overtime for their services during the parade. I guess it is too much to expect the police to DONATE a few hours of their precious time in the spirit of the holidays. After all, other prople involved in the parade is working free of charge. Hubbard is truly the Epicenter of Greed in this area. And if you think the citizens are incensed over the parade situation, wait until they find out that their pampered, greedy city employees are the ONLY members of AFSME in the world who won't accept any consessions and, in fact, will expect RAISES! In the financial climate of today's world that is just simply GREED in its most pure, shameful form. And just who is negotiating the new contract with these unsupervised employees? The Mayor, that's who, King Arthur has a son-in-law who will benefit from the outcome of the contract. Isn't this a conflict of interest? And the final question, why have employees of the Hubbard electric department been working without a superintendent for FIVE years? It is no wonder excessive overtime is going unchecked. There is no accountability when the inmates are running the asylum, as I've heard it so aptly said. The decicions are being made by a "foreman" who's father just happens to be on Hubbard City Council. Aha!
Hey ytownboy22....Capri Cafaro has, in your words "distinguished herself through thoughtful energetic service" Huh??? I guess you'd better explain that to the rest of us who have only seen her show up where there is free food. What has she done that ANYONE else in the same position could or would not have done? How has she "distinguished" herself? The Vindy article to which you refer contained verifable FACTS that even you cannot deny unless you are totally delusional. Name even one fact that the Vindicator got wrong. Your words would have more creedence if they were backed up with facts. That is, other than the fact that you obviously work for Cafaro.

What a shame that the inside of the Eastwood Mall has become so unsafe that they need to patrol with guard dogs. Truly a sad state of affairs.
