We do NOT need any bike facilities on West Newport. The shared bike-pedestrian facility on East Newport violates many design standards and has many dangers, and the one on Old Mill Drive is even worse. Both promote wrong-way riding and have caused serious bike crashes.
Park roads have a low speed limit and are very safe for bicycling. If even more safety is desired, give walkers an off-road path, and ticket speeding drivers.
Motor vehicles should be severely restricted within a quarter mile of any elementary or middle school. For schools not on main highways, only school employees, school buses and residents should be permitted to drive that close to a school. And streets near schools should have speed humps like those in the Glen area in Boardman, to force drivers to slow down.
A schools' greatest safety hazard is the doting parent chauffeurring their prince or princess, putting walkers and bicyclists at risk. Second greatest hazard is the "rat runner" motorist, shortcutting through residential areas.
So keep the cars out. Kids should be walking at least a quarter mile to school anyway.
This is excellent news! But it is time for ODOT to start installing sidewalks everywhere people would naturally like to walk. Sidewalks should be a normal part of every road project.
A 12 year old kid should be able to walk to the store to get a loaf of bread for his mom, and adults should not have to drive to go short distances. Allow transportation choices, as in other countries!

I sympathize with Christine Wortman said her son, Robbie Carr. But his death in Iraq was not related to Osama Bin Laden, except that the Bush administration used Bin Laden as a lying excuse to invade Iraq.
Bin Laden was Saudi, not Iraqi. Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks. Our boys who died in Iraq died for Cheney and Halliburton.
