Youngstown schools spent $7 million on substitute teachers over the last five years

"teachers who take all of their alloted sicks" Allotted sick days are contractual. It's not their fault the administrators signed the agreement. That is the agreement. Then there is the ability to roll over those days....also contractual!! You have to sub them out for every one of those excused days and it ain't free!! Just think if you are paying a teacher $150 a day and have to sub them out on those days at $75, that teachers agreement cost us $225 for every day they are off. At 15 days a year "excused" that's $3375 per year per teacher just wages!! Every 10 teachers is $33,750. How many teachers in the system?

If the absenteeism is a result of " unexcused" absences, shame on the teachers. If they are "contractual" absences, shame on the administrators that signed their contracts. You cannot afford employees contractual time off and then cry when they utilize it.

UPDATE: 28 dead in Connecticut school massacre; shooter ID corrected

Banning the production and / or possession of these weapons will only shift the production to other countries and raise the demand for them to be delivered directly across the 1969 mile Mexican border leaving us with UNREGULATED and UNREGISTERED assault weapons in the hands of criminals.

The only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

To some degree we all have some amount of mental instability. If you didn't you would never ever get mad or frustrated. At what point that can be triggered into an act of violence is what is so un predictable. You will never stop these kind of acts. If not guns then diesel fuel and fertilizer. When somebody snaps, they will find a way to inflict harm with or without guns.

Youngstown, suburbs sealed Obama’s big victory

"In the wake of the Nov. 6 election, petitions seeking to secede from the union have been filed on behalf of 23 states on the White House website, https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/peti.... Most of the petitions contain the same wording and ask to withdraw “peacefully” from the United States in order to form independent governments." GOP....FIRED!! Here's a tissue.......

These morons need to secede from the GOP! If Obama is such a devil, why did the GOP not present a viable candidate to run against him? Obama is so terrible, his policies are so damaging but the GOP pits Mitty and Eddy Munster up against him and they can't even hold their home states!! Should be the Grand Old Angry White Guy Party!! The GOP got what they deserve.....failure. The one and only time I saw honesty in the face of Romney through this entire election was after he was defeated. Oh yeah, prior to any succession, those 23 states should be required to pay their share of the national debt. And when the Taliban sets up training camps in Texas, the Texas Army can deal with them Not the brave soldiers of the USA Military. The USA could then just lob scud missiles at Houston, Austin and Dallas. These people should be tracked down and tried for treason. If you think property values are bad now how bout when a state loses all the Fed highway funds and military protection?? Usually lack of military protection affects property values.

With Boardman’s growth, officials eye fees

We don't pay enough taxes to get ticketed or get in an accident in Boardman?? I think all surrounding communities should create reciprocal laws that would charge Boardman residents for police and fire assistance in our communities. Maybe the thought of paying for the misfortune of being involved in an accident is enough to make me go to the New Castle Walmart or the Niles Best Buy. I can eat in many communities. It doesn't have to be Boardman. There is a Mall in Niles. They would all welcome our business.

Maybe county should have closed for the week

In the private sector, my coworkers and I have endured 3 different bankruptcies in the last 4 years between 2 companies with no raises in the last 4 years. This is hardly the economy to be dishing out raises to any government employees. Your raise is that you don't have to give concessions. That is more that enough right now. If its good enough for me in the private sector it is way good enough for you. And I made it to work every day last week. No problem. No roads were closed in Mahoning County as a result of the weather. End if story. What are you people running a grade school??

UPDATED: Two arrested after early-morning shooting near YSU

Google 55 Indianola Ave. It's nowhere near YSU. It is on the south side and not in what I would consider a "good area". If you go back through the Vindicator every day for a month or more, there was either a shooting in Youngstown or a trial for one, or both. Where is the value for life in this city? Its become common place that there is a shooting today in Youngstown. That's a damn shame!! The bad thing is the Innocent people and victims. Condolences to the families involved.
