Reading this story makes me sad and it also reminds me of a passage from Tim Russert's book, "Big Russ and Me" where the succesful kid wanted to buy his blue collar dad a car, but the dad was worried it would look like his kid (although grown up) was supporting him.
On one hand, the guy does not legally have any obligatoin to help his mom. But 99.9% of the sons I know would do so in a minute, so maybe this "actor" has some thinking problems of his own....
